John Kingston wears many hats — he’s a photographer, overland explorer and environmentalist, as well as the founder of Roaming Lost, an overland expedition outfit and creative agency focused on creative client work and community building. What initially began as a simple creative outlet for Kingston during a trip to Iceland soon morphed into a community of likeminded adventurers gathered around a shared love of exploration, camping, hiking, public land cleanups and more. We recently caught up with Kingston to ask him about his top overland gear essentials, which you can read in his own words below.

Selby Knife (Folsom Necker):

“This Selby knife is awesome because it’s compact and doesn’t really interfere with clothing or feel uncomfortable. But the quality is superior, and it’s nice to have a knife that stays sharp and is extremely durable. Gotta have a knife for everyday use.”

Sony A7R IV

“The camera system is essential — not just for work but any trip. I’ve always loved documenting my surroundings, regardless of any reason why. I used Nikon for years but switching to Sony has been great — I can appreciate the small form factor and weight; it helps with lugging around gear.”

2020 Ram 1500 Rebel:

The vehicle. It’s my main source of travel so it’s important to have something reliable and practical. This is my third vehicle build — it’s pretty extensive, but it’s my favorite. The RAM EcoDiesel delivers some amazing gas mileage, and it’s still quite capable for being a full size truck.”

DOMETIC CFX3 55IM:

“This fridge allows me to stay off the grid for an extended period of time while remaining prepared for anything that might go wrong —  like getting caught in the middle of nowhere for some reason. It also allows me to bring a wide range of food to be able to enjoy in the outdoors! A fridge this size allows me to be on the road 2+ weeks without going into a grocery store.”
