We can’t afford it either, but this commissioned desk by Restoration Hardware makes us wish we were willing to dedicate a larger portion of our tax return on “unnecessarily expensive and cool things for home”.
The Vintage Cigar Leather Mayfair Steamer Secretary Trunk Desk from Restoration Hardware is actually constructed by antiques dealer and furniture maker Timothy Oulton of London. The reproduction steamer trunk is made by covering a solid wood frame in handmade distressed vintage cigar aniline-dyed leather and accented with 3,000 (yes, that many) hand-hammered brass nail heads. Open her up and you’ll find a pull-down desktop, myriad drawers, cubbies, a bookshelves, and even a wire management system all lined in leather-edged canvas. Casters are mounted to the bottom to allow easy movement and opening/closing. Because it’s hand-made, each steamer trunk is unique in finish, though we’re betting that the stratospheric price alone will make that a non-issue.
Now, who’s willing to hand-make one of these?
