Kawasaki’s Most Advanced Motorcycle Is as Powerful as It Is Stunning

Among the baker’s dozen of available Ninjas, the pinnacle edition is worth a gander for vicarious and visceral thrills alone.

Legitimized by psychologist Edward Thorndike in 1920, the halo effect is the tendency for positive impressions of a person, company, country, brand or product in one area to boost someone’s overall feelings about said entity.

Derived from that term is the halo product, which is essentially an over-the-top item that captivates your attention, drawing you toward a brand, only to purchase a more wallet-friendly model.

Sport motorcycle with a sleek, angular design in metallic silver and black, featuring a green frame. It has a prominent exhaust pipe on the right side, large disc brakes with Brembo calipers on the front wheel, and a five-spoke rear wheel. The bike has a streamlined fairing and a sharp tail section with the "Ninja H2R" logo visible. The brand name "Kawasaki" is displayed on the fuel tank.
The highest-end Ninja is so dazzling, tip to tail, it’s hard to take issue with the price. Even if you do, the good news is you can get in the door with the nameplate for a fraction of the cost, just a bit over $5,000.

I can’t help but think of all that while beholding Kawasaki’s absolutely mesmerizing Ninja H2R ABS hypersport bike, a pretty dang effective billboard for the Ninja family of 13 total bikes, many of which are surprisingly affordable.

With the window to order one — as well as a couple other H2 models starting at close to half the price — open for the next six weeks, here are four highlights of this spellbinding track star.

1. So many ponies

I could tell you that the H2R boasts a 998cc 4-stroke, in-line 4-cylinder, DOHC, 16-valve, liquid-cooled engine. But more impressive than what it is is what it can do.

Toward that end, we are talking a whopping 322 horsepower at 14,000 rpm and 121.5 lb-ft of torque at 12,500 rpm. So no, Kawasaki isn’t kidding with that “closed-course only hypersport” language.

2. Shocking development

Not surprisingly, the bike tempers all that power with a fully adjustable high-performance racing suspension set-up. The Öhlins TTX36 rear shock provides precise damping to boost traction, comfort and responsiveness.

Meanwhile, the KYB AOS-II (Air-Oil-Separate) low-friction cartridge fork offers progressive damping through the end of the stroke. All of which adds up to a ride that in the right hands is just as smooth as it is fast.

3. Next-level tech

The electronics on this bike are frankly at the very edge of my own comprehension. (Forgive me, I’ve only ever suited up for a couple of track days.)

An IMU-enhanced feedback version of Kawasaki TRaction Control (KTRC) anticipates and acts to help prevent sliding and high siding. You can calibrate it based on your own whims too, with nine modes (degrees of intervention), plus the option to simply shut off KTRC.

4. Aero style

Beyond looking gorgeous, the aerodynamically oriented design reduces drag, boosts downforce and keeps air flowing to the supercharger. Designed by the aerospace division of KHI (Kawasaki Heavy Industries), carbon-fiber vortex down control wings boast angled winglets to enhance airflow and downforce.

A chin spoiler further adds to downforce generation and stability. Lastly, the rigid carbon-fiber upper cowl and rounded rear cowl reduce wind resistance to keep you flying, no matter how many laps you require to quench your need for speed.
