Barbour has been making waxed canvas for over 130 years. It’s safe to say that the British brand is among the most iconic and recognizable in the world when it comes to this fabric. And while it trades primarily in apparel, like waxed canvas jackets, Barbour is far from a one-trick pony.

Case in point: the brand has recently launched a pair of relatively modern EDC bags that utilize this legendary material. The Barbour Field Waxed Canvas Crossbody Bag and Barbour Field Waxed Canvas Satchel are just two more examples of how the brand’s prowess and pedigree extend well beyond apparel.

Better still, they’re more affordable than you might expect.

The larger bag on the left is a messenger style with a flap closure secured by two black buckles, a black adjustable shoulder strap, and a top handle. The smaller bag on the right is a compact crossbody with a zippered front pocket, a black adjustable strap, and both bags feature a black patch with a lighthouse logo and the Barbour brand name in tan.
The two options include the Satchel (messenger bag) and Crossbody Bag (sling), seen here.

Wax ecstatic

As mentioned, the exteriors of these bags are made from Barbour’s 10-ounce waxed canvas. As such, it behooves me to explain why that’s such a big deal.

For starters, the fabric is extremely durable. Canvas itself is resistant to scratches, pokes, prods, abrasions and so on. But the addition of wax on the exterior makes it even more rugged.

The sling’s zipper pulls have a clever secondary function: they work as bottle openers.

Furthermore, that wax layer adds a level of weatherproofing that cotton canvas otherwise simply does not have. Without it, these bags would be soaked in even a drizzle. With it, water will simply bead off them, even if it’s a deluge. That weatherproofing is aided further by the inclusion of weatherproof zippers.

To add even more desirability, waxed canvas also ages uniquely. Depending on how you use it, how frequently, and even the quirks of your own movement, these bags will acquire a patina unique to you, making them all the more individual.

Got this in the bag

While the waxed canvas is the star of the show, it’s far from the only highlight. For instance, on the sling bag, there are zipper pulls that sneakily double as bottle openers.

Both bags also benefit from thick, adjustable webbing straps and all-metal hardware. And that’s just on the outside.

The upper part of the interior features a classic Barbour tartan pattern in dark green, red, orange, and white lines. The outer edge appears to be made of dark brown waxed cotton or leather.

Inside the bags, both boast multiple internal organizational slots. Furthermore, the heritage styling extends to the interior, where there are tartan details alongside a tough nylon lining.

Lastly, both the outside and inside are fitted with small leather Barbour patches, adding a little more character. The outside tag, with the little lighthouse icon, is especially interesting.

Two men are shown from the back. The man on the left wears a dark hooded jacket and carries a large black and dark green messenger bag with a flap and buckle closures. The man on the right wears a tan quilted vest over a blue and green plaid shirt and carries a small black crossbody bag with a zipper and a logo patch.
Here, you can see the size difference between the two bags.
