This Is One Hell of a Classy Way to Learn Watch History

A gloriously illustrated new book traces the evolution of watches through the 20th century.

An understanding of history adds a level of appreciation to just about any watch you encounter. The Watch: A Twentieth Century Style History is a new book conceived in that spirit, tracing the art and industry of the watch through the 20th century, decade by decade. A hefty hardback measuring 9.4 by 12 inches, its 336 pages feature 400 color images, including those of notable and influential watches as well as relevant illustrations and cool vintage advertisements.

More than a visual treat, author Alexander Barter backs up the horological eye candy with insight and substantive context. (Barter knows his subject well after spending over a decade at the auction house Sotheby’s watch division.) Books like this provide a way for watch enthusiasts to appreciate a range of important watches that are not easy to see in person, all presented in a thoughtful and deliberate way in one place. Those with a general appreciation of the analog will also make an ideal audience for the feel of a physical book (as opposed to an electronic one or digital web pages).

A great gift for watch fans (holidays are coming up!) or as a classy coffee table appointment, The Watch: A Twentieth Century Style History is published by Prestel and available for pre-order now at a price of $39 with a publication date of October 15, 2019.
