BMW’s Sweet Retro-Styled Adventure Bike Gets Optimized for Off-Roading

Just because it’s purpose-built for racers doesn’t mean it’s (completely) forbidden fruit for everyday riders.

Just last week, I was writing about BMW’s pitch-perfect color-focused update to its dreamy retro-styled R12 G/S.

Now the brand has rolled out an off-road-focused edition for riders competing at the 2026 BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy event this September in Romania.

The competition-spec R 12 G/S introduces well over $5,000 worth of upgrades to the base model.

That doesn’t stop the rest of us from configuring something similarly rugged (OK, maybe 75 percent as rugged) on our own.

Should you be interested in doing so, here’s all you need to know about the 2026 BMW R 12 G/S GS Trophy Competition Bike.

Go configure

The bike retains its signature silhouette and trademark power plant, the 1,170cc air/oil-cooled boxer twin making a claimed 109 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 85 lb.-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm.

Where it separates itself is with the various sponsors, numbers and event-specific graphics on the tank and front fender.

Meanwhile, various packages introduce heated grips and handlebar risers, if not integrated navigation.

The bike also boasts integrated navigation, an Akrapovič silencer and a 5-liter tank bag converted into a small rear luggage bag, plus engine protection bars, cylinder head guards and a Rally cockpit fairing.

At least some of these components can be procured through the BMW Motorrad Parts section of BMW’s official site.

There’s also Light White paintwork and a red seat, which are available as options but unfortunately can’t be retained once you start introducing all the other upgrades.

One of the simplest and most important off-road upgrades, beefy knobby tires, is included with the Enduro Package.

Everything else can be added to the standard bike via the R12 G/S’s configurator page, as follows.

The Comfort Package introduces Gear Shift Assist Pro, Hill Start Control, heated grips and cruise control.

The Enduro Package Pro adds off-road tires, an 18-inch rear wheel and handlebar risers for better standing ergonomics.

Finally, Riding Modes Pro and Headlight Pro (featuring adaptive cornering lights) upgrade the electronics and lighting.

Availability and pricing

While the 2026 BMW R 12 G/S GS Trophy Competition Bike is not available to the general public, as mentioned, most of it can be recreated starting with a standard R12 G/S.

It will cost you, though; while the bike’s base price is $17,095, the upgrades will raise that figure to at least $22,245.
