In Hollywood, the sequel rarely improves upon the original. Notable exceptions include The Godfather Part II, Evil Dead II and, of course, Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

The Toolkey II is an entirely different proposition — one that’s capable of a whole lot more than helping you get high.

In the knife and EDC world, successful sequels are a bit more common. And while Screwpop’s follow-up to the mighty Toolkey might not be made of liquid metal, its standout ingredient is equally potent.

We’ve been fans of Screwpop itself for a few years now. The scrappy Kansas City area-based brand has made a name crafting clever, affordable tools that squeeze remarkable value into small packages. One of our favorites is the Hit Kit, which packs a pipe, stash and BIC lighter holder into one fifth-pocket-sized unit.

The Toolkey II is an entirely different proposition — one that’s capable of a whole lot more than helping you get high. Made of 420 stainless steel, measuring just 1/8″ thick x 1.25″ wide x 2.5″ long and weighing just 0.65 ounces, it’s one function-loaded mini multi-tool.

Among its most useful functions are as a bottle and can opener, a bike spoke key, a hex bit driver and a rope and wire cutter (thanks to a serrated edge). Like its predecessor, the Toolkey II lacks a true blade, so you can take it through TSA and onto a plane, no problem.

But what really makes it exceed the original is a feature we’ve never seen in a unibody (single-piece) multi-tool before: a strong rare-earth magnet near the tip. That element makes the Philips/flathead screwdriver magnetic, which can be enormously handy for picking up and sticking to the actual screws you are trying to tighten.

As a bonus, that magnet (made of Neodymium, N52, to be specific) also makes the Toolkey II work as a ferrous tester. And Screwpop is quick to note that most standard keys are made of softer, non-ferrous materials, so if you throw this thing on your keychain, it won’t stick to them.

As with most multi-tools of this type, the brand does stretch a bit to get to 17 functions — two of them are “tag buster” and “lotto scratcher” — but considering the upgrade in screwdriver performance and everything else you get for a Jackson, we’re inclined to forgive them on that front.

We cannot, however, extend the same forgiveness to the makers of Zoolander 2.
