Oris has a talent for presenting uncommon complications in classic, approachable formats.

Case in point: the new Big Crown Calibre 113, which, though it looks like a fairly common watch at arm’s length — colors notwithstanding — presents a fascinating arrangement of complications up close.

Stainless steel wristwatch with a green textured dial featuring two red subdials, one for seconds and one for power reserve. The watch has silver hour markers and hands, a date window at 6 o'clock, and a day display below the 12 o'clock marker. The bezel is polished stainless steel, and the bracelet is a combination of brushed and polished links. The outer edge of the dial displays months and week numbers.

Oris

This deceptively complex watch places Oris’s impressive Caliber 113 movement in the brand’s marquee Big Crown series.

The hand-wound movement, introduced in 2017, is notable for its 10-day power reserve, patented non-linear PR indicator and business calendar complication.

Such detailed complications call for a large dial housed in a 43mm polished steel case, placed under a domed sapphire crystal with an inner anti-reflective coating.

The dial features white hour markers, a date window at 6 o'clock, and a day window below the 12 o'clock marker. The brand name "ORIS" is displayed below the 12 o'clock position, with "BIG CROWN 10 DAYS" and "SWISS MADE" text on the lower half of the dial. The watch hands are white with black edges, and the second hand has a pink arrow tip. The outer edge of the dial shows months and dates in small print.
The time, day, date and week are set by a single crown.

Oris celebrates this intriguingly uncommon watch with its typical deft use of color. The dial is a glittery mint green with light pink accents on the small seconds, power reserve meter, railroad minutes track and calendar hand.

Taking care of business

Business calendars aren’t quite as mechanically complex as perpetual calendars and are far rarer, but they provide a similar multi-tiered orientation in large-scale time measurement.

The watch has two magenta subdials: one for seconds on the left and a power reserve indicator on the right. It displays the day of the week below the 12 o'clock marker and the date in a window above the 6 o'clock marker. The outer edge of the dial shows months and week numbers in white text. The watch has a stainless steel bracelet and a large crown on the right side.
The outer rim of the dial is marked with a 52-week, 12-month track.
Oris

In this case, the Big Crown Calibre 113 displays the day and date in standard windows at twelve o’clock and six o’clock, respectively. What makes it a business calendar is the 52-week complication.

The dial’s outer ring is marked with each month in a capitalized sans-serif font aligned with the 52 weeks in a year. It is indicated by a central hand with a pink arrow point, which looks like a seconds hand but takes a whole year to make a single rotation.

A single crown sets all three parts of the calendar and the time with hacking.

The stainless steel case features engravings including "ORIS HÖLSTEIN," "SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL," "STAINLESS STEEL," and "5 BAR." The movement is marked with "SWISS MADE," "ORIS," "HIGH MECH," "CAL. 113-2," "POWER RESERVE 10 DAYS NON-LINEAR INDICATION," and "THIRTY-SEVEN (37) JEWELS." The watch has a metal bracelet and a transparent case back revealing the detailed inner workings.

The movement housing this unusual complication is equally interesting to look at. Oris put it on full display behind a screw-down sapphire crystal exhibition caseback.

What makes a meter non-linear?

The non-linear power reserve meter is another feature that requires close observation to be fully appreciated. Placed at three o’clock, it appears to be an oversized standard meter, but there’s more to it.

The watch has white hour markers and hands, a date window at 7 o'clock, and a day window below the 12 o'clock marker. The outer edge of the dial displays months and week numbers in white text. Oris’s caliber 113 hand-wound movement has a whopping 10-day (240-hour) power reserve.

Since a traditional power reserve meter would make it difficult to discern one day from one hour of remaining charge, Oris created a scaled meter that uses progressively larger segments as the remaining time decreases.

Since the Swiss watchmaker patented this brilliant solution, it can’t be found on any other watch brand.

Oris

If I had to sum up Oris in a single phrase, it would be “modest elegance.” The Big Crown Calibre 113 is a classic, handsome watch ideally suited for daily wear with a fun color scheme.

But from a few feet away, you could never guess at the mechanical wonder hiding beneath the dial.
