This Rugged Teardrop Trailer Borrows a Key Feature From Classic Camper Van Design

What do you get when you combine the tow-ability of a small trailer, the ruggedness of a squaredrop (the boxier cousin of the famous teardrop design) and the spacious sleeping quarters of a pop-up camper van bed?

You get the Arkto C-10, that’s what.

Small but mighty

The Arkto C-10 is the latest in a continually evolving category of off-road lodging: small, tough, squaredrop trailers that offer serious off-roading capability and marry it with comfort-driven interiors.

The C-10 is a smaller take on the brand’s original G-12 trailer, notable for its ability to sleep four people. (If you haven’t spent time in a squaredrop trailer, just know that is an impressive feat.)

The C-10 is just as impressive as its older sibling, but for different reasons. (No sibling rivalry here.) Thanks to its manageable 16.5-foot length and 2,750-pound base weight, it’s more towable: SUVs, cars and small trucks with tow ratings between 3,500 and 5,000 pounds can haul the C-10 with ease.

That’s just the start of the fun, however. The C-10’s design implements a feature commonly seen on camper vans but rarely found in squaredrop trailers: the pop-up sleeping area.

Don’t think that the pop-up roof serves to stuff more campers into the C-10’s interior though. Arkto’s inclusion of the queen-sized pop-up sleeping area isn’t for increased sleeping space; rather, the design creates a dual-level interior, perfectly appointed for two travelers.

A split-level on wheels

By adding the pop-up sleeping space to the C-10, Arkto didn’t just figure out how to add a queen-sized sleeping area to a small trailer; the brand also cracked the code on increasing living space without adding a ton of weight.

On the first floor (or main level, whatever you want to call it), campers can chill out in a cushioned sitting area that accommodates three people.

When the pop-up is popped and the bed is flipped back, there’s nearly 7 feet of clearance in the main portion of the C-10, allowing for plenty of standing space and room to change.

Three windows integrated into the pop-up canvas come with zip-open blinds and bug screens, offering panoramic views and protection from the elements.

The main kitchen lives outside, but thanks to the innovative sleeping situation, Arkto was able to add in an interior food prep area, complete with a 113-liter electric fridge/freezer.

Availability and pricing

The C-10 is available now on Arkto’s official website, and although the company is based in Canada, customers from the U.S. are welcome to pick up one of these sturdy little squaredrops if interested. The C-10 starts at $46,000.
