Many of the most iconic sneakers debuted with an equally iconic marketing campaign that catapulted them into the pop culture consciousness.

One of the most brilliant occurred in 1982 when New Balance debuted the 990, the original running “super shoe.” It was the first sneaker to retail for over $100, which was justified with a suite of supportive performance features that revolutionized the design of running sneakers.

New Balance emphasized the 990’s performance by debuting it in only one color: gray with white highlights. In an era when bright colors dominated athletic sneakers, the Massachusetts shoemaker stood out by going bland and letting the quality of its product speak for itself.

The shoe was a smash hit, and its marketing scheme was so successful that gray has been the brand’s signature color ever since. From Steve Jobs’ iconic 992 to the stereotypical 574 “Dad Shoe,” gray has led the way.

So, it was only a matter of time before New Balance’s latest affordable design, the 471, received a colorless color scheme. And it has finally arrived in the model dubbed “Shipyard with calcium.”

The best part is that the new 471 has an elevated look that aligns more with the Made in USA 99x series than its lightweight predecessors. It has a sturdier upper with hairy suede panels over a woven mesh base, making it an even better bargain.

Going gray

Since introducing the 471 in March of this year, New Balance has teased its signature look with releases like a limited edition Grey Days model and a couple of off-white versions with pastel leather “N” logos.

The new 471 in “Shipyard with calcium” hits the nail on the head with a gray suede and mesh upper accented with a white leather “N,” heel tab and tongue. The layered EVA midsole pairs two shades of creamy off-white and sits atop a gum herringbone outsole that curves up the toe and heel.

This 471 does not use the dark blue-gray that appeared on the original 990, but New Balance has played with a wide range of grays over the years.

This medium shade of gray creates a natural tone for the hairy suede panels and the underlying basket-weave mesh. It is a neutral look that can be paired with practically anything.

Keeping a low profile.

New Balance explains that the 471 was inspired by sneakers from the 1970s, which predate the innovations of the 990 and subsequent evolutions. A simple wedge midsole, an open-ended foam tongue and a low ankle lack the support and comfort famously found in New Balance’s high-end models.

The result is a pared-down shoe that is easy to wear but, while by no means uncomfortable, is not suited for all-day wear or strenuous training. With the new suede and mesh upper — a clear upgrade over its nylon panel predecessors — the 471 functions like a Made-in-USA 99x Lite.

Availability and price

The New Balance 471 in “Shipyard with calcium” is available now from New Balance and Todd Snyder.

The upgraded materials increase the model’s initial retail price by $10. Even at $110, it is a fair price for one of New Balance’s best-looking designs, now available in its signature look.
