Welcome to Talking Points, a series that looks at what makes certain products worth talking about, brought to you by Gear Patrol Studios.
When you think of SOREL’s Caribou boot, you probably picture the original, thick-soled winter boot that’s been a staple for cold-weather adventurers for decades. Now, SOREL returns to its roots with the Caribou Horizon™ GTX, a reimagined version that modernizes the icon while retaining its rugged spirit. This new iteration blends the heritage silhouette with contemporary enhancements — like a Vibram sole and a Gore-Tex membrane — making the boot more capable, lighter, and more technically refined than ever.
VibramHeritage Reborn, Performance Elevated
The Caribou Horizon™ GTX takes the DNA of the original Caribou boot — its bold shell, winter-ready insulation, and unmistakable look — and pushes it forward. While the original is still rooted in functionality, the Horizon™ GTX introduces modern materials and construction to up the ante on comfort and usability to transform the beloved Caribou into your go-to adventure boot.
Built for the Elements — and Then Some
On the bottom, a Vibram XS Trek Evo outsole — inspired by the original Caribou’s lug pattern — delivers grippy, all-terrain traction whether you’re trudging through snow, ice, or slush. At the heart of the Horizon™ GTX lies a Gore-Tex waterproof membrane that seals out moisture while letting breathability do its job, paired with 200 grams of insulation to keep feet warm and dry in subzero temps. Made of a seam-sealed LWG-certified leather upper, the boot delivers a refined look alongside the brand’s signature durability.
Materials and Color Options That Respect Tradition — and Modernity
SOREL introduced a range of materials and colorways that nod to the heritage boot while pushing the design forward. The Caribou Buff option uses full-grain leather for a classic, premium look that feels closest to the original. The Black version swaps in rugged ballistic nylon, giving the boot a more technical, lightweight attitude geared toward all-weather performance. Meanwhile, Utility Green arrives in soft suede camp, offering a more tactile, natural finish. Together, the three executions round out a lineup that balances tradition with innovation, making the Horizon™ GTX adaptable to a range of styles and conditions.
Light, Flexible, but Still Rugged
Unlike its heavier predecessor, the Horizon™ GTX feels lighter on foot and more flexible in its shell, thanks to modern construction techniques. The injected rubber midsole and removable felt-top footbed balance cushioning. With a Vibram sole, this boot packs superior grip and durability that is equally at home on a muddy trail, slick sidewalk, or on a snowy day.
