Uniqlo Just Refreshed One of the Biggest Cheat Codes in All of Winter Outerwear

The most expensive jacket the Japanese retailer makes borrows numerous high-end cues while still undercutting luxury competitors by more than $1,000.

Uniqlo just stocked the latest iteration of its Ultra Warm Down Coat, which also happens to be one of, if not the most expensive, items the affordable fast-fashion retailer offers.

It’s available in two new colors alongside the classic black, and it builds on the success of previous versions while maintaining an aggressive price that still undercuts most high-end alternatives by a wide margin.

Here’s what you need to know.

Mimicking a luxury outerwear icon

Uniqlo has offered versions of this jacket for quite a few years. It’s mainly the color options that rotate between seasons, although the price of the jacket has also steadily ticked up in recent years, too.

No fashion house can claim credit for inventing the parka. That distinction belongs to the Inuit and other indigenous peoples living in the polar regions of the globe.

However, in the modern era, brands like Canada Goose are responsible for transforming the outerwear workhorse into a luxury status symbol.

Which is why it’s probably not by accident that the Uniqlo Ultra Warm Down Coat resembles a Canada Goose jacket, particularly the Langford Parka (and Heritage version), which starts at $1,475. This is fast fashion after all.

Both feature the signature long parka silhouette, removable fur-trimmed hoods (in the case of the Heritage Langford), sleeker profiles, and similar pocket configurations that have become synonymous with serious cold-weather gear designed for city life.

Still, dismissing the piece as a mere luxury knockoff is also selling the jacket short.

The Ultra Warm Down Coat has built a solid reputation backed by actual cold-weather users. Reddit’s frugal fashion community has positive things to say, with one user reporting that they’ve worn the coat daily through Chicago winters for multiple years without showing any signs of wear.

The jacket earns high marks for its warmth—several buyers note they don’t need to layer heavily underneath—and the sizing runs true to fit, though some recommend sizing down for a less bulky silhouette.

The waist pockets can be accessed via the top or sides, while the hand warmer pockets are placed higher up towards the chest, which some users feel is awkward.

But others also share that the pocket placement and sizing could be better and bigger, especially in a world where people are handling bigger phones, gloves, and other EDC items all at the same time.

No one should expect the rain and snow fighting chops of this jacket to compete with premium offerings made from Gore-Tex either. At least Uniqlo’s product page is upfront about it, noting “the water-repellent finish is not permanent.”

Canada Goose’s Langford parka also boasts rugged Cordura in high-abrasion areas, which you won’t find on this jacket.

Pricing and availability

Despite the jacket’s obvious shortcuts, the consensus is that, like many Uniqlo items, the quality still exceeds expectations for a coat at this price point. That said, the cost of this coat has ticked up compared to past year releases. Then again, what hasn’t in 2025?

And if you’re patient, you may be able to score the coat for far less as part of an end-of-season clearance sale, as some users have celebrated in years past.

Still, for anyone in need of an everyday winter coat that handles severe cold without requiring a second mortgage, this Ultra Warm Down Coat should be on the shortlist.
