For those unfamiliar, the common dace (Leuciscus leuciscus) is an iridescent blue freshwater ray-finned fish native to Europe that has since been introduced to other parts of the world.

Considering the fact that US knife designer Joe Mangiafico is an avid angler, it is perhaps no surprise he chose this scaly swimmer as the namesake for his latest lovely EDC knife

Having previously designed a blade called The Brook — and with an upcoming one dubbed the Canoe — he’s clearly drawn to aquatic-inspired monikers.

Like the fish, the Böker Plus The Dace is nimble, quick, adaptable and, of course, beautifully blue.

Before we dive in, a couple of quick extra notes about the name: The Böker Plus label applies to knives that, the brand says, “combine cutting-edge innovation with stylish design and everyday reliability.”

While all are developed under the watchful gaze of the experts at Böker HQ in Solingen, Germany, the designer pool and manufacturing facilities are much more global.

Jimping on the spine of the blade improves grip, while the knobby rear flipper ensures swift deployment.

Regardless, the results continue to meet a high standard of form and function with few rivals.

Though I bristle at the “The” in the name — while daydreaming of an extremely niche Weird Al parody song referencing a “B-B-B-Böker Dace” — I’ll let it slide for now.

After all, there’s so much to love here, beginning with the business end, a 2.87-inch drop-point blade made of Nitro-V steel. This material offers admirable edge retention and corrosion resistance without breaking the bank — a big reason this knife’s price ducks under $100.

The cutting edge gets a performance boost from non-slip jimping on the spine, while its aesthetics are augmented by a stonewashed finish and a decorative ricasso.

Meanwhile, a knobby rear flipper guarantees snappy deployment from the ergonomic grey 6061-T6 aluminum handle scales, which house a sturdy liner lock to hold the blade firmly in place.

Rounding things out are some fitting iridescent blue anodized elements: the pivot screw, handle screws and a reversible tip-up pocket clip.

It all adds up to one handy little 3.17-ounce flipper that can ace a variety of EDC and outdoor tasks, from slicing through cardboard and other packaging to cutting ropes and tackling food prep.

Oh, and don’t worry. You better believe you can clean and fillet a fish with this thin,g too.
