Ever since the first The Fast and the Furious movie featured a Mark IV Toyota Supra Turbo as one of the star cars, it’s sat on a pedestal as one of the holy grails of Japanese sports cars.

Following its big screen debut, the Japanese tuner world further dissected the Supra, which further proliferated its popularity.

But once the modding crowd revealed how easily capable its legendary “2JZ” inline-six is at achieving eye-watering outputs with simple bolt-on modifications, everyone and their mother went out to source a MKIV (“mark four”) Supra to compete for pink slips.

That said, a completely original and unmolested fourth-gen Supra has become rarer than hen’s teeth. Which is why today’s BringATrailer find of a bone-stock A80 Supra Turbo has us doing a double-take.

Tuned Supras are overplayed, original is best

Once the tuner scene began flooding with overly modified A80 Supras, it became a case of a horse beaten well past its death.

Tuned Supras became so popular that many now perceive the concept of a modified Mark IV Supra as overplayed. And the car’s original allure seemingly disappeared altogether.

As such, it’s much more notable to find an original A80 Supra. And it’s a relief to see that someone resisted the urge to butcher one of Toyota’s finest automobiles.

It’s also a wonder why sports car fans don’t appreciate the A80 Supra Turbo for what it originally was. When it launched in the 1990s, the Supra Turbo sprinted to 60 mph in less than five seconds.

For the era, that was just as fast if not faster than anything that cost two to three times more from Italy or Germany. And it cost a little over $40,000.

Its midsize body meant that it was more of a sports grand tourer than a lightweight sports car. Especially when compared to the likes of the Celica or MR2 from the same period. But that didn’t diminish how much performance-per-dollar it offered at the time.

Well-preserved, but still used and cared for

This specific example is almost as original as A80 Supras come. With just under 97,000 miles, it’s barely broken-in. Especially since it hails from an era that many refer to as Toyota’s peak with build quality and reliability.

The double-DIN aftermarket radio and speakers is about the only unoriginal part about the interior.

It’s no garage queen. But still, even having done nearly 100,000 miles, it’s outrageously clean. There doesn’t seem to be any exterior body imperfections. The leather is still fully intact and almost perfect with very little wear.

And under the hood is what appears to be a completely stock and unfettered example of the engineering masterpiece that is the 3.0-liter twin-turbo 2JZ-JTE.

It’s an absolute treat to the eyes compared to the otherwise histrionic arrangement of neon-colored aftermarket parts typically seen at your local car meets.

Keen viewers will notice the aftermarket all-aluminum radiator, which yes, is technically unoriginal and a modification. But that was likely replaced due to age and mileage. It is a 30+ year-old car with almost 100,000 miles on it, so that’s not surprising.

Another unoriginal modification can be seen on the inside. One of the previous owners fitted an aftermarket audio system and double-DIN touchscreen head unit. But other than that, we just love how original, clean and used but well-loved this A80 Supra is.
