While the brand has crept into the fashion and streetwear industries over the years, Patagonia is, first and foremost, an outdoor brand. As such, it is known for some pretty serious innovation.

Take its new Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Freeride Jacket. This coat is designed as a snow-going backcountry adventure jacket that reduces bulk without compromising on weather protection and warmth.

While those features obviously make this a killer adventure jacket, they also make this coat sneakily perfect for a wholly different venue: the city.

Freeride, take it easy

One of the greatest strengths of this jacket lies in its Nano-Air Ultralight integrated technology. For those not in the know, this is one of Patagonia’s most impressive insulation innovations.

Yes, you read that right. This windbreaker-thin jacket is actually fully insulated, utilizing the brand’s 20-gram FullRange insulation that’s featherlight and ultra-thin, yet still adds plenty of warmth in “cool-to-cold conditions.”

While it might not be the best option in a sub-zero blizzard, that’s plenty of warmth for the average jaunt around the city, even in the bleak mid-winter. But warmth isn’t everything, as this jacket proves.

The minimal insulation has the added benefit of keeping the jacket extremely lightweight, and it won’t stifle your range of motion. Wearing this jacket, you’ll stay warm and protected without looking and feeling like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

In my element(s)

Insulation alone does not make a great jacket. Yes, even if it’s ultra-thin. Luckily, that’s far from the only thing this Patagonia coat has to offer.

The upper shell is made from recycled nylon stretch ripstop bonded to a polyester circular-knit back. It also has a DWR coating, which makes it highly water-resistant (with no intentionally added PFAS.) The lower shell is recycled polyester air-permeable shadow stretch ripstop, also with a DWR coating.

It also has low-profile pockets, a Napoleon breast pocket (perfect for EDC gear) and glove-friendly cuffs, which also serve to help keep the wind at bay, even when you’re not wearing gloves. Similarly, the low-profile hood was designed to fit under helmets, but the way it hugs your head helps prevent wind from whipping into it.

All of this, and more, comes in a jacket that weighs a grand total of just 10.93 ounces — well under a pound. For those keeping track, yeah, that means this jacket is also exceptional for travel.
