When backpacks have become ergonomic, dependable, hard-wearing, and supremely organized, where does innovation lead next? Weight reduction.

Ultralight packs have steadily gained popularity over the past decade, with complete backpacking setups now routinely dipping below 2.5 pounds.

Once-niche fabrics like Dyneema and Ultra — which made that weight reduction possible — have also gone mainstream, cutting ounces while maintaining impressive strength.

But it’s not every day the outdoor world gets a new, potentially game-changing fabrication. That’s why Graflyte is such a big deal.

The mono-polymer material represents an entirely new way of manufacturing ultralight packs, and outdoor darling Gossamer Gear’s new Alchemy Collection, made with Aluula Graflyte, makes that “game-changer” promise feel tangible.

The Alchemy Collection, built with Graflyte, represents Gossamer Gear’s dedication to pushing boundaries, as well as a massive step forward in pack construction.

Graflyte earns its ultralight status through its material makeup, which lends it the ability to be used in innovative new ways.

A mono-polymer like Graflyte doesn’t need the traditional coatings or adhesives that comparable ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene (UHMWPE) materials rely on, which means it won’t fray or delaminate.

But Gossamer Gear didn’t stop at simply using a novel new material for its latest line of packs — the brand worked with its factory partners to develop a new manufacturing process specifically for Aluula, reducing seams to nearly nonexistent through its advanced welding process.

Pack it out

Gossamer Gear is claiming that the Mirage 40 is the lightest pack of its size and style on the market, which represents a substantial leap forward in pack innovation if true.

At just 19.4 ounces (~1.2 pounds) with its frame included and 18.7 ounces (~1.16 pounds) without, the Mirage 40 is more than half a pound lighter than the popular Hyperlite Mountain Gear Southwest 40L.

The latter is a frameless style, making the weight difference even more significant.

But just because this pack is incredibly minimal, don’t expect it to skimp on features.

The new carbon fiber X-frame provides ultralight structure and direct load transfer, and it can also be removed to reduce weight further.

The Mirage 40’s design includes cinchable, integrated water bottle pockets, a stretch mesh front pocket, rolltop closure with two-way buckles and an EVA foam shoulder harness and waistbelt for comfortable carry.

Alongside the Mirage 40L, the Alchemy Collection also includes the 7.9-ounce Murmur 36 and the 6.2-ounce Elixir 20 daypack.

The Mirage 40 is listed now on Gossamer Gear’s official website as part of the Alchemy Collection for $450. While it is currently sold out, you can sign up there for restock notifications.
