The Most Iconic Pocket Knife of All Time Is Tough Enough to Survive the Apocalypse (Sort of)

One of the most legendary folding blades ever makes a prominent appearance in the S2 premiere of Amazon’s hit sci-fi show, ‘Fallout.’

Admittedly, I consume a lot of media. I’m a pretty major movie buff, and I try my best to keep up with many streaming series, as well. One of my favorites from a couple of years ago was the Amazon Prime Fallout adaptation, based on the video game series of the same name (which I similarly love).

But there’s something else you should probably know about me: I also love gear spotting. I don’t necessarily do it consciously, but whenever I’m watching a show and see a piece of gear I recognize, I pull a full Leonardo DiCaprio and feverishly point at the screenSee that? I know that!

So, imagine my surprise when, during the Season 2 premiere, I happened to notice something of particular interest to me: a knife. And it wasn’t just any knife; this one could arguably be called the most iconic folding knife of all time. It was the Buck 110 Folding Hunter.

To be fair, this wasn’t a “blink, and you’ll miss it” moment, like the first shot of the Higonokami in Apple+’s Godzilla show, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Fallout put this Buck knife on prominent display.

Fall out with me, oh yeah

For the uninitiated, Fallout is a dystopian, post-apocalyptic show about an alternate United States where nuclear war has ravaged the landscape. It primarily follows Lucy MacLean, a vault dweller (someone born and raised in a seemingly idyllic underground bunker), who leaves the safety of her home to track down her father.

In the Season 2 premiere, her journey continues (albeit with a slightly different goal). However, there are also numerous tertiary stories unfolding simultaneously. One concerns the people in the vault she left behind, as they try to keep their crumbling infrastructure intact.

It’s no exaggeration to say the Buck 110 Folding Hunter is one of the most significant folding knives in history.

It’s here that the knife in question makes an appearance. At roughly the 18-minute mark, two vault dwellers — new Overseer Stephanie Harper (played by Annabel O’Hagen) and Chet (played by Dave Register) — have a conversation in the Overseer’s office. (The Overseer is the leader of the vault.) During that conversation, Stephanie takes the knife and stabs it into her desk, and there is a prominent close-up.

It remains to be seen whether the knife will play a larger part in their story (as the Higonokami did in Apple+’s Godzilla shoe). Still, it’s safe to assume that choosing to feature this particular knife, steeped in Americana, was a deliberate decision.

This iconic knife is actually quite large, measuring 8.5 inches overall with a 3.75-inch blade.

The Buck stops here

It’s no exaggeration to say the Buck 110 Folding Hunter is one of the most significant folding knives in history, especially American history. Released to the public in 1964, the design has largely remained unchanged for over 60 years — a testament to its timelessness.

Based on my own knowledge of the knife, it looks like the version that appears in the show is the standard edition. For reference, it measures 8.5 inches total with a 3.75-inch clip-point blade.

The versatile blade is made from 420 steel, a reliable old standard. And the handle is a combination of ebony wood and bass (for the bolsters and liners).

It also has a reliable backlock mechanism — one of its most iconic features. While the 110 Folding Hunter isn’t the first knife to feature this mechanism, it was the first commercially successful, mass-produced knife with one.
