Patagonia’s Ultra-Thin, Ultralight Hoody Is Way More Robust and Capable Than It Looks

At this point, Patagonia is synonymous with outdoor gear and apparel. Furthermore, since its founding in 1973, the brand has also been at the forefront of innovation.

In fact, the adventurous outfit has (repeatedly) made leaps and bounds with a few specific outdoor classics, like the once-humble fleece and the puffer jacket, elevating them well beyond their origins.

And if one of the brand’s latest launches, the Patagonia R1 Ultralight Hoody, is any indication, those innovative developments are far from slowing down.

Fleece it out

The R1 Ultralight Hoody was actually developed for cold-weather climbing use. As such, it has a slender silhouette, made to fit nicely under harnesses and other equipment. The low-profile cut also extends to the cuffs and hood, allowing the former to slip in under gloves and the latter to be worn under a helmet.

As its name suggests, it’s not only slim but also incredibly lightweight. It clocks in at just shy of 10 ounces — more specifically, 9.87 ounces. That makes it great for packing and travel, too, since it’s easy to pack without weighing you down.

At this weight and cut, you might expect it to be made from something … unimpressive, like a thin nylon or polyester. However, you could be forgiven for being fooled, as this pullover doesn’t look at all like a fleece, although that’s precisely what it is.

Utilizing Patagonia’s groundbreaking R1 fleece fabric, that means this jacket is deceptively warm. Yes, it can be used under other jackets as a baselayer, but it is also cozy enough to stand on its own, even in cooler weather.

Brawnier than it looks

While a warm fleece this thin and lightweight is a pretty marvelous feat, that’s not all this half-zip has to offer. You see, while the inside is soft and cozy, the exterior is designed to weather (pun intended) plenty of punishment.

As mentioned, the R1 Ultralight Hoody was made for climbing, as in rock climbing. Even those unfamiliar with the nuances of the sport can understand that means a lot of exposure, not just to weather but to harsh landscapes.

As such, the outside has been made abrasion-resistant, with the brand opting for a smooth finish that helps deflect cuts, scrapes and so on. It also has fewer seams, opting for a single-panel sleeve construction that helps up the durability and makes for more comfortable pack wear.

As is increasingly typical of Patagonia gear, the fabric is 100-percent recycled polyester crafted in a fair trade-certified facility. This might be one of the brand’s best reinterpretations of a classic fleece yet, and it’s bound to be another fan-favorite as a result.
