Ford could be on the path to making its controversial four-door Mustang prospect a reality. The Dearborn automaker recently recommitted itself to making affordable cars again, not just SUVs.

But rather than focusing on reviving some of its previously well-known nameplates, like the Fusion and Focus, Ford could be charging forward with its four-door pony car.

A long controversial rumor could become a reality

According to CarScoops, which heard from CEO Jim Farley, Ford is looking to get back into producing affordable cars again. More interestingly, the first model to launch from the initiative could reportedly be a new high-performance, rear-wheel-drive sedan.

Although Farley didn’t divulge any specifics, this would be in line with the four-door Mustang rumor.

Back in 2022, Ford began hinting at the prospect, which is a supposed effort to expand the Mustang lineup. The goal to grow the Mustang brand is what eventually led to the creation of the Mach-E.

Despite its controversy, the Mustang Mach-E is one of the brand’s best-selling models and electric vehicles.

With the Mach-E leading the charge, the idea was then to introduce a sedan. Ford chief designer, Chris Stevens, teased the concept through some sketches, and the Dearborn automaker was so serious about the idea that it supposedly showcased some renderings to dealers behind closed doors.

However, after some supposed strong backlash from diehard fans, Ford put the four-door ‘Stang idea on the back burner. Now, a few years later, it could be a crucial part of the company’s new affordable car initiative.

Ford’s not finished with EVs just yet

Over the past several months, Ford more or less admitted to getting too invested in EVs. As a result of its risky bets, the Dearborn automaker supposedly took on major financial losses with numbers well into the billions.

Hence, the reason why Ford is reworking its strategy to emphasize affordability. But while the company pumped the brakes on its EV plans, it’s not entirely giving up on them either.

Word has it that the four-door Mustang could arrive as an affordable EV. All things considered, this makes sense as the Mustang Mach-E is one of the brand’s most successful cars and electric vehicles to date.

After all, Ford could simply take the Mach-E, lower its roof and shoulderline, and create a four-door model out of that.
