Before Christopher Ward got into the approachable haute horlogerie game with the Bel Canto and C12 Loco, the brand was almost exclusively known for its dive watches.

Although they no longer dominate the brand’s catalog, Christopher Ward’s divers are still among the best in the business at their price. Most of the recent attention has been focused on the brand’s top-level titanium and Globolight diver, the Trident Lumière, with the classic Trident Pro 300 representing the brand’s everyday diver.

Falling between the cracks is arguably the brand’s most compelling diver, the C60 Sapphire Edge. Debuting last May, the Sapphire Edge took its name literally, pairing a sapphire bezel insert with a translucent sapphire dial and caseback, tinting all three pieces blue.

It was an abundance of sapphire for a dive watch (the front crystal is also a sapphire, as on all CW watches), but that wasn’t the only thing interesting about the Sapphire Edge. The watch also featured another fun, novel feature in the form of a lumed rubber strap, the brand’s first.

The Sapphire Edge generated some buzz when it debuted, but I haven’t heard much about it in months. That’s partly because CW releases new watches at such a rapid clip, virtually all of them hits, that it’s hard for any one watch to hold attention for very long.

But now, the Sapphire Edge is getting another moment in the sun, as Christopher Ward, with almost no fanfare, has launched a second version of the watch that’s even cooler than the first.

Livin’ on the edge

The original Sapphire Edge was all blue. Blue dial, blue bezel, blue caseback, blue strap. Even the colored highlights used for the seconds hand and first 15 minutes of the bezel were in light blue. It looked good, but only for fans of blue.

The new Sapphire Edge goes with a color scheme that’s somehow both more classic and more adventurous. The translucent dial is now a frosty white, giving a more ethereal view of the movement and date disc below. The sapphire bezel, meanwhile, is black on this new version, taking the aesthetics in the complete opposite direction of its tone-on-tone predecessor.

The sapphire caseback is now smoked black, with more of a gradient effect than before. The colored accents are also more pronounced, with orange being used on the first quarter of the bezel and the trident seconds hand.

The watch is available on a steel Bader bracelet, like before, but it pairs better with the orange Aquaflex FKM rubber strap. Just like on the original, the strap is impregnated with lume, with its white lining and sides glowing in the dark. Since the hands, applied indices and every mark on the bezel are all filled with Super-LumiNova Grade X1 BL C1, the Sapphire Edge White has quite an insane nighttime signature.

Outside of the new colors, this is the same C60 Sapphire Edge as last year’s. The stainless steel Light-catcher case measures 42mm across, 49.32mm from lug to lug, and just 10.7mm thick.

The water resistance is an impressive 300m, with both the crown and caseback screwing down. Lastly, the movement is the Sellita Calibre SW300-1 automatic, which beats at 4Hz, has a power reserve of 56 hours and features a date complication at 6:00.

Availability and pricing

The C60 Sapphire Edge White joins the Blue in CW’s permanent catalog, i.e., it’s not a limited edition. It’s also priced identically to the blue version. On the luminous rubber strap, it costs $1,420. On a steel bracelet with a microadjustable clasp, it’ll set you back $1,555.

You can preorder the watch now for shipment in mid-March on Christopher Ward’s website.
