BMW’s Stunning New Bagger Breaks the Mold Six Ways from Sunday

If this inline six-driven work of art/science project isn’t the future of motorcycles, I want to live in the alternate reality where it is.

For a brand generally known for impeccably engineered, supremely reliable two-wheelers, BMW Motorrad isn’t afraid to take bold swings with its concept bikes.

Still, the latest blue sky silhouette from the revered German brand is pretty bonkers even by their standards.

Set for a public reveal at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Italy’s Lake Como this weekend, the Vision K18 is arguably the brand’s most jaw-dropping bike.

Its surprisingly engine-driven design also provides a pretty interesting window into how the brand thinks these days.

They’ve got your six

The brand’s press release about the bike is probably best digested with the help of some mind-altering substances, but a couple of early sentences nicely lay the groundwork for the unicorn gracing the images on this page:

“The Vision K18 embodies BMW Motorrad’s ambition to combine technical excellence with emotional appeal, making performance not only measurable but also visibly tangible.

At the same time, it positions the inline six-cylinder as part of BMW DNA and sends a clear signal of pioneering spirit: greater radicality and sharper character down to the finest detail – as inspiration for future series-production solutions.”

I was personally pretty stoked to read that, because it points to this concept actually carrying over into some production bikes, though it’s very unlikely any will look quite like this particular silver surfer.

It’s also reflective of the brand’s clear love for this particular engine, an emotion that carries through much of the bike.

Getting down to brass tacks, the beating heart is a 1,800cc inline six-cylinder, a high-powered beast whose dimensions dictate the stretched profile of the K18, which also takes cues from the legendary Concorde supersonic airline, another vehicle that appeared to be in motion even when it wasn’t.

BMW’s existing six-cylinder bikes reside in the long-haul touring category, and this silhouette follows along those lines (though based on its lack of actual on-board storage, it’s as much a cruiser as it is a tourer or a bagger, IMHO).

The six-pack of tailpipes, cleverly illuminated by (presumably) the brake lights, is among the bike’s most striking traits.

Together with the aircraft inspiration, that foundation translates to large body surfaces and complex, visible tech with meticulous cut-outs and openings.

The inline-six tribute manifests in the repetition of that number: hence the bike has six intakes, six LED headlights and, most stunning of all, six spaghetti-like tailpipes, which reside in futuristic-looking “saddlebags” on either side of the rear wheel.

The K18 also features hand-formed body parts, a hydraulically lowerable suspension and seamless aluminum surfaces interplaying with lavish forged carbon.

Despite the elongated silhouette, the K18 actually looks pretty comfortable to ride, at least for a bit.

The brand’s description of the bike references “the heat of speed,” a guiding principle that manifests in what it calls a “deliberately employed heat-haze effect.”

This smoky notion presumably explains another significant feature: the actively cooled headlight.

Availability and pricing

The BMW Motorrad is a one-off, but if you happen to be anywhere near Lake Como this weekend, perhaps you can at least get a look at it.
