Audioengine is a Texas-based hi-fi company that has been making some of our favorite powered desktop speakers for years.

In the last year, it has released “Next Gen” versions of several of its most popular desktop speaker systems, including the A2+, HD3, and HD4 (in order from smallest to largest).

Audioengine A2 Plus 2025 — The A2+ Next Gen is the brand’s smallest and most popular desktop speaker system.

These new models look identical to their predecessors, but have been upgraded with USB-C connectivity, a 24-bit DAC, and Bluetooth 5.3. Basically, they are easier to connect to today’s laptops and desktops. And they sound better, too.

Audioengine HD3 Next Gen (2025) — The HD3 Next Gen adds a more premium finish and a dedicated headphone output, but is otherwise the same as the A2+ Next Gen.

For those looking to get a great deal on these new speakers — all were released in 2025 — Audioengine is running a rare sale on “open box” or factory refurbished versions of all three Next Gen desktop speakers.

These are Audioengine’s smallest, most affordable and most popular desktop speaker system. They are identical to their predecessors but add support for 24-bit audio and a USB-C input. They come in four standard matte finishes: black, white, red and green.

Audioengine HD3 Next Gen (Open Box)

The HD3 Next Gen is very similar to the A2+ Next Gen. In fact, they are the same size, have the same drivers and feature the same 60-watt power amplifier. The differences are that the HD3 Next Gen is available in more premium finishes, features detachable speaker grilles, and includes a dedicated headphone amplifier.

Audioengine HD4 Next Gen (Open Box)

The HD4 Next Gen looks and works exactly like their smaller sibling, the HD3 Next Gen. The difference is that they are substantially bigger and better-sounding speakers. They have 120-watt amplification (twice as powerful) and a larger woofer. Available in three different finishes: satin black, walnut or high-gloss piano white. (However, only the black models are in stock for the current open-box sale.)
