Kanto Audio has been one of the biggest names in powered speaker systems for the past several years. Its Ora, Yu, Ren and Tuk lines, which range from $300 to $900 (and vary from desktop to bookshelf-sized), are all well reviewed and quite popular.

This week, the Canadian hi-fi company revealed updated versions of its Yu4, Yu6 and Tuk ranges. Both passive and powered models of each received new drivers and refreshed designs. All models will be available this summer.

Most interestingly, it introduced the Tuk Grand, an all-new flagship speaker. According to the press release, “it represents the most ambitious speaker Kanto has created to date.”

A Grand Tuk

As you probably could deduce from its name, the Tuk Grand is essentially a bigger and better version of Kanto’s Tuk speakers. The company says it builds on the foundation of the original Tuk but features a larger cabinet and more refined drivers.

Comparing the two, each Tuk Grand speaker is roughly two inches taller and about 1.5 inches wider than a standard Tuk speaker.

Both the Tuk Grand and the updated Tuk speaker feature the same revised AMT tweeter with a refined waveguide geometry, promising a more detailed sound with a smooth high-frequency response.

But thanks to a larger cabinet and bigger woofer, Kanto claims that the Tuk Grand delivers a “more expansive soundstage, improved low-frequency extension and a more immersive listening experience overall.”

Passive or active? Or both?

Unlike the 2019-released Tuk, which had soft rounded edges, the Tuk Grand and redesigned Tuk speakers have a more squared-off profile.

Not only does this design change give the speakers a more modern aesthetic, but Kanto claims that it enhances their sound by “reducing edge diffraction while contributing to a cleaner, more focused soundstage.”

Like the rest of its speaker lines, Kanto has introduced two versions of the Tuk Grand: one powered/active, one passive.

Naturally, the passive speakers are meant to be integrated into a more traditional hi-fi system, while the powered models are more feature-packed and work like a modern set-up.

The powered Tuk Grand supports Bluetooth streaming and modern inputs, including RCA (x2), optical and USB-C. When playing over USB-C or optical, the speakers support high-resolution audio up to 24-bit/96kHz.

Availability and pricing

Kanto Audio’s new flagship speakers, the Tuk Grand, will be available sometime this summer. A pair of passive models will cost $800, while a pair of the powered/active versions will run you an extra $200.

The smaller, redesigned Tuk speakers will cost $700/pair and $900/pair for the passive and powered/active models, respectively. They will also be available in the summer.

Both models of the Tuk Grand (as well as the updated Tuk) will be available in several different color options: Black, White, Walnut, Burled Engineered Wood and Butter.
