Nivada Grenchen just took its fan-favorite Antarctic 38mm and gave it a decidedly after-hours alter ego. The new Antarctic Erotic keeps the clean, vintage-leaning dial and 38mm stainless steel Spider Case but adds a see-through caseback that hides an animated penguin scene that only comes to life when you wind the watch.
Driving the display is a modified, hand-wound Soprod P054 movement that’s been re-engineered so the ratchet wheel acts as a cam, translating the winding motion into a vertical movement that animates the penguin automaton on the back. The watch remains a legit daily wearer with 10 ATM water resistance, a 12.45mm thickness, 45mm lug-to-lug and multiple strap options, including Beads of Rice or Flat Links bracelets plus rubber and leather straps.
True to the Antarctic name, the project also has a conservation angle: Nivada has partnered with field-research organization Oceanites to “adopt” a colony of roughly 21,000 penguins, with a portion of the project budget supporting on-the-ground monitoring and ongoing updates from researchers.
The Antarctic Erotic time-limited pre-order system opened earlier today, April 30, at 4 p.m. Geneva time, with different dial versions offered in 69-minute, 69-hour and 6.9-day windows before orders close for good.
