The New York City Marathon is one of the best weekends in New York. As residents of the city, we look forward to it every single year, whether we’re running or cheering. In honor of the 49th TCS NYC Marathon, Gear Patrol looks at what it’s like to run in New York City, showcasing the people and places that sculpt the community.
As a part of the running community ourselves, we brought together 16 crews — their leaders and participants — so the viewer can experience the vibe of what it’s like to be a runner here. Throughout the film, the viewer passes by major landmarks that represent so much of the landscape in NYC, turning a corner to meet up with the groups that make running here special. Never before have so many crews showed up for one event, especially something that was not a race.
As the mileage ticker tracks higher and higher, each location reminds the viewer of races past — everything from PRs to finish lines, long runs to the first-mile back. The 16 crews join our runner for the final couple miles, showcasing that as a runner in New York, you’re never truly running on your own. No matter the distance, time or location, there’s always someone out there with you.
Whether you’re running the marathon, watching or are hearing about it for the first time, Running NYC captures the very essence of what it means to be a runner here today.
Here’s the gear we tested throughout the run: New Balance 860 v10 NYC Marathon Shoes ($145), Satisfy Justice Trail Long Distance 10-Inch Shorts ($259), Tracksmith Twilight Tee ($58) and Stance Men’s Run Crew 3-Pack ($48).
