Good morning. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world’s grandest three-day showroom of new consumer tech, begins today in Las Vegas. Tons of new and exciting gadgetry will be unveiled; some might end up in your home one day, while others will never amount to anything more than a prototype. We’ve cut through all the BS to highlight the news that matters to you, the everyday user of electronics. Here’s what’s good in gear: new Samsung washer and dryer units, a super-accurate heart rate monitor, a beautiful dive watch handpicked by GP editors and much more.
And here are some fresh stories to start the day.
Samsung FlexWash + FlexDry Four-in-One Laundry System
Unveiled this week at CES 2017, Samsung’s newest washer and dryer home units are unlike any you’ve seen before. Each has two laundry compartments — one large main, and one on the top for smaller loads. Each unit can be controlled via a smartphone app, and since the washer doesn’t need to be hooked up to two water lines (like traditional washers), you can easily install it on your own, without the help of a professional.

QuardioCore Wireless ECG Monitor
Perhaps the most accurate consumer heart rate–monitoring device to date. Paired with your iPhone via Bluetooth and worn around your chest, it also tracks heart rate variability, breathing, skin temperature and general fitness activity. If it’s good enough to be worn by heart patients and trusted by their doctors, it’s certainly good enough for gym-goers and triathletes.

Fortis Marinemaster
This Fortis Marinemaster has all the hallmarks of great divers watches from the late ‘60s and early ’70s: a SuperCompressor case, a rotating inner-bezel and a bright-orange kaleidoscopic dial featuring a compression chart. Though the faded lume and patina on the dial may show its age, this old-school tool watch has been curated and vetted for Gear Patrol by the vintage watch experts at Analog/Shift, making it ready for the rigors of your daily life. – Andrew Connor, Watches Writer
