This Unicorn of a Porsche 911 Is as True a Time Capsule as Any

The car’s rare spec and low odometer count make the selling party’s chosen advertising strategy all the more interesting.

Try as I might with each opportunity to make a New Year’s resolution, I have yet to be able to kick my habit of browsing classifieds websites for cars. There’s just something about the project potential that keeps me coming back for more.

Beyond being an outright time sink, though, it can lead to some unfortunate purchases, as anything that seems like it may be too good a deal to be true, probably is.

However, occasionally, you can stumble across some gems that make the search worth the scroll.

Just take this 1997 911 Turbo S, for instance. In addition to being an incredibly rare and collectible example of Porsche engineering, it’s also a remarkably well-preserved car that comes with a shockingly low number on the odometer.

A Facebook find unlike any other

Being a fourth-generation 911, this Porsche is already a highly desirable car, as the Type 993 was the last of the automaker’s air-cooled offerings, and it’s a model that many purists consider to be a high point of the lineage.

What makes this particular example even more remarkable, though, is that it’s a Turbo S. Porsche built just 435 of such cars for the global market, fitting them with a 424-horsepower flat-six, an Aerokit II body kit and spoiler, as well as a set of quad exhaust tips and some snazzy yellow brake calipers.

Of those, just 183 made their way to North America, so the fact that this 993 is Stateside at all means that it’s a very exclusive model. While it’s not quite as hard to find as something like a 911 GT2 of the era, it’s nevertheless of an extremely rare breed.

And the thing is – even though the 993 Turbo S is an established classic at this point, it remains impressive in its performance capabilities. Thanks to some upgraded K24 turbos and a healthy 560-lb-ft torque output, it could hit 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds and 0-100 mph in less than 9.0 seconds before climbing to a top speed of 184 mph.

Low miles make for quite a premium

If you weren’t already impressed, consider that this car — posted on behalf of a dealer in Ohio named Marshall Goldman — comes with just 94 miles on the odometer. Yeah, it’s barely even broken in.

And it certainly shows it.

$2.4 million might seem like a lot for a 911, but good luck finding another of this vintage, in this condition.

Inside and out, this Porsche is clean. Make sure to check out the high-res gallery, because you’ll be hard-pressed to find a blemish on the car — from the CD changer to the seat inserts, it’s all spotless.

Even the full leather interior is free of creasing, and the carpet looks shockingly fresh. As impressively preserved as these elements are, though, the interior condition is made only better by the fact that the car includes its original owner’s manual, toolkit and spare key.

Between the rarity of the model and the condition of the car that’s being offered for sale, it’s easy to see why the seller is asking nearly $2.4 million for this Porsche. After all, where are you going to find another one like it?

Moreover, given that other 993 Turbo S cars have sold for nearly a million dollars (typically with far more miles), there’s clearly a high ceiling for the fourth-generation 911’s value. And, a GT2 did manage to clear as much at auction, so it provides a loose approximation even if it’s not an exact comp.

The asking price is certainly ambitious, so only time will tell whether there’s someone with some money to burn on a near-perfect 911.

Whether anything comes of a Facebook ad for a multi-million-dollar Porsche, only time will tell. However, you can’t deny that it’s amusing to find a diamond like this posted in the rough that is Marketplace.
