Ram’s More Accessible Off-Road Pickup Returns with a Rebellious Trick

The Rebel X is back for 2026, and it bucks a notable option from the brand’s 1500 pickup truck lineup.

Even if you don’t have the cash to splash on potent trucks like the Ram RHO and the Ram TRX, the brand’s lineup offers alternatives. While not exactly affordable, they are at least more accessible in terms of their asking price.

One such option is the 1500 in Rebel trim, and with it the Rebel X. Ram introduced the latter in 2025 to celebrate a decade of the Rebel nameplate, fitting its half-ton pickup with even further refinements inside and out.

While it had seemed like the truck was destined to be a one-year limited model, it now turns out that such is not the case. Like other pickups in the Ram catalog, the Rebel X is back, resurrected for another run.

The Rebel X rolls again

In case you missed it last year, Ram’s Rebel X makes for quite the upgrade to the 1500 platform. Along with some choice performance features, the trim gives the truck a surprising level of refinement.

The headline feature is, by far, the model-exclusive Rough Road Cruise Control. By combining adaptive speed control and adjustable steering weight, Ram has made it so that the truck can maintain its speed even over off-road terrain, up to 20 mph.

However, that’s not all it brings to the table. On the tech side, the Rebel X builds on the Level 2 Equipment Group through a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, a leather-wrapped performance shifter, some red-stitched seats, as well as exclusive visual touches like badging and bedside graphics.

Moreover, the Rebel X brings all of the upgrades that are standard to the base Rebel. As such, in addition to a 1-inch lift with Bilstein shocks and an electronic locking differential, it also boasts underbody skid plates, some 33-inch all-terrain tires and, of course, a set of tow hooks.

With power coming from the 420-horse Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six, the truck is made only better by a new military-inspired ‘Tank Clear-Coat’ paint color that’s debuting for this year.

A divided Ram stance

As exciting as it is that Ram is bringing the Rebel X back for 2026, the truck’s return does come with one glaring omission: the lack of a Hemi option.

While it wasn’t unusual last year because of the 5.7-liter engine’s absence from the 1500 lineup at large, the sole six-cylinder option is a bit more conspicuous now that the V8 is back on the table.

Granted, it’s not for lack of good reason. The new Hurricane is lighter, more powerful and more efficient than the V8 at 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque compared to 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.

Stellanis is also heavily in the engine, as it poured resources into a mutli-energy approach before the emissions standards took a hike in the United States.

Nevertheless, it makes for a confusing strategy. The engine’s discontinuation and subsequent revival amounted to a sizable decision, bringing a significant change in Stellantis personnel and the eventual return of the TRX.

It’s for similar reasons that the current Charger doesn’t seem to compare to its predecessor. The public clearly demands a V8 option in the muscle car, but Stellantis continues to peddle the Hurricane because of its previous commitments.
