Ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show, Jaguar debuted an all-electric SUV concept called the I-Pace, which has a range of 220 miles and should hit 0–60 in four seconds, placing the car in direct competition with Tesla’s Model X.
The I-Pace is powered by twin electric motors on the front and rear axles, delivering 516 lb-ft of torque (numbers comparable with the company’s lightning-fast F-Type SVR coupe) and 400 horsepower. The absence of a combustion engine allows for a roomy, wide-open cabin; the center stack infotainment system is appropriately future-facing, with one sizable 12-inch touchscreen dedicated to navigation and another 5-inch screen for climate and infotainment.
The American market seems to have an insatiable love affair with SUVs, and Jaguar’s luxury colleagues like Audi, Mercedes and BMW all have electric iterations in their pipeline. Still, the I-Pace is expected to be on the road in late 2018, making it the first real challenger to the Model X. Specs are in Tesla’s neighborhood: a 90kWh battery that gives 220 miles of range (compared with the Model X’s 250), a 0–60 time of four seconds (versus 3.2), and an 80 percent charge time of 90 minutes (45). Since it’s still “only” a concept, prices are only speculative.
