Bentley just announced it’s expanding its Bentayga lineup with a new, more affordable V8 version to compliment the original W12 and diesel models. Admittedly, “affordable” is relative, but for Bentley, that means its new SUV will come with a $187,000 tag.
To most people, the original W12 Bentayga’s price of $250,000 is a ridiculously large sum of money to drop for a two-row SUV, and understandably so. When you consider it’s a Bentley, though, it starts to make a little more sense. Still, a quarter-million dollars is still hard to justify, not to mention opting for the optional $170,000 Breitling dash-mounted clock. What Bentley is doing here, by undercutting the W12’s price by around $35,000, is placing the V8 square in the sights of Britain’s other super-luxury SUV, the $208,000 Range Rover 5.0-liter V8 Supercharged SV Autobiography which until now hasn’t had any real competition in its price bracket.
The new entry-level Bentayga comes with a 4.0-liter V8, good for 542 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque that’ll get the 5,280-pound SUV from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds. Bentley is also quoting a range of 464 miles with the help of a 22-gallon tank. But a stat-war between the two Brits is pretty meaningless: when it comes to luxury cars, it’s all about the experience, so we’ll have to wait and see what kind of challenge the baby Bentayga really brings to the table.
