When it comes to Porsche’s motorsport icons, typically, it’s cars such as the 917, the 935 or the RSR that get most of the spotlight. For good reason — each of these models was incredibly impactful in its contributions to the brand’s performance ethos.
However, even before those racing greats, Stuttgart put out another banger in the 904 Carrera GTS. Most notably, it was Porsche’s first-ever fiberglass-bodied competitor.

Though the brand built the 904 for just two years, the car didn’t need long to demonstrate the breadth of its abilities. Along with racking up wins in tough endurance contests, like the Targa Florio and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it could also hold its own in rally competitions — a 904 finished second during a snow-covered 1965 Monte Carlo Rally.
Being part of such a short production run, however, the 904 only exists in limited quantities, and it’s rare to see them outside of museums today. Porsche built just 106 examples with four-cylinder engines, and only three received the firm’s F1-derived engine, a flat-eight.

Now, someone has plans to see the lattermost of these legends realized as a modern-day restomod.
