One of Porsche’s Rarest and Most Ambitious Models Is Getting a Modern-Day Revival

When it comes to Porsche’s motorsport icons, typically, it’s cars such as the 917, the 935 or the RSR that get most of the spotlight. For good reason — each of these models was incredibly impactful in its contributions to the brand’s performance ethos.

However, even before those racing greats, Stuttgart put out another banger in the 904 Carrera GTS. Most notably, it was Porsche’s first-ever fiberglass-bodied competitor.

Though the brand built the 904 for just two years, the car didn’t need long to demonstrate the breadth of its abilities. Along with racking up wins in tough endurance contests, like the Targa Florio and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it could also hold its own in rally competitions — a 904 finished second during a snow-covered 1965 Monte Carlo Rally.

Being part of such a short production run, however, the 904 only exists in limited quantities, and it’s rare to see them outside of museums today. Porsche built just 106 examples with four-cylinder engines, and only three received the firm’s F1-derived engine, a flat-eight.

Now, someone has plans to see the lattermost of these legends realized as a modern-day restomod.

Encapsulating a legend

The outfit is called Aerfal, and the name of its 904 revival is the ‘Æ94.’ Before you take up arms at the thought of a company hacking away at an automotive icon as rare as Porsche’s 1960s Carrera GTS, know that it’s not really a restomod.

Rather, it’s more of a replica. Because sourcing one of such cars would be prohibitively expensive (and next to impossible), Aerfal will instead be using the Porsche 914 as a donor. Well over 100,000 examples rolled off the line during the model’s time on the market, so it’s in far greater supply.

However, it’ll be much more than a mere re-bodying. To ensure that Æ94 captures the spirit of the original Porsche 904, Aerfal will be incorporating a bespoke flat-eight engine for the powerplant.

Air-cooled and naturally aspirated, the block should provide a driving experience that’s decisively analog. In contrast to its forbear, it’ll be considerably larger and more powerful — displacement is to be bumped from 2.0 liters to 4.0 liters, and output is claimed to come in at around 400 ponies.

In an era dominated by four-figure horsepower numbers, that might not sound like much. But that’s because Aerfal’s replica marches to the beat of its own drum.

According to the brand, the Æ94 “is not about chasing numbers, but about creating an engine that breathes character, a soundtrack and sensation that connects the driver directly to Porsche’s primal racing heritage.”

A modern interpretation

If you’re already excited about the prospects of this Porsche 904 restoration, just wait — there’s still more promise to the project yet to be discussed.

As reported by Motor1, Aerfal has plans for a cabin that’s equal parts refined and retro. Along with a generous use of titanium and vegetable-tanned leather, it’ll also feature bespoke beeswax-treated surfaces, a Momo steering wheel and some instrument dials developed in collaboration with a “prestigious watchmaker” that supposedly correspond to an accompanying chronograph.

Moreover, the Æ94 will incorporate a roster of industry authorities. Aerfal has supposedly partnered with acclaimed Porsche specialist Tuthill to work on the chassis dynamics, and the brand will be equipping each of its 904 replicas with top-notch parts from names like Michelin, Brembo and BBS.

More to come

At this stage, Aerfal’s 904 revival exists only as a rendering, though the company is reportedly nearing the pre-order stage. Pricing and full specifications are to come.
