An Unlikely Carmaker Confirms a New Off-Roader to Take On the Land Rover Defender

It appears the rumors of a new off-roader from Audi are shaping up to be true. AutomotiveNews and Germany’s Automobilwoche report that the Ingolstadt-based automaker is indeed making arrangements to build its own SUV.

It’s part of the company’s larger plan to boost US-based production. However, instead of building its own factories, Audi intends to piggyback on parent company Volkswagen AG’s investments in Scout’s revival.

Furthermore, Audi will reportedly make use of Scout’s new platforms to underpin its new SUV. Last year, Scout announced its return with a massive press event, revealing a plan to launch a series of all-electric and range-extended four-by-fours, all with the backing of VW.

Although details aren’t specific, both outlets confirmed Audi’s ambitions to build their own off-roader from Scout’s efforts.

When asked about the prospect at a recent investor meeting, Audi’s CEO, Gernot Döllner said that “we haven’t given up on that dream.” The reply suggests that this new off-roader will undercut plans of a larger SUV.

In October 2024, Scout revealed its Traveler SUV and Terra pickup electric vehicles. Both revive old models built in the 1960s and 1970s, which were signature items of the previously defunct brand.

With support from Volkswagen AG, the plan is to build the new EVs as competitors against the likes of Rivian, except at more affordable price points. Scout is prepping to build the Traveler and Terra in Blythewood, South Carolina.

Both will apparently using electric vehicle drivetrain tech from its parent company, beginning in late 2027. With all of the ducks lining up in a row for Scout, the Volkswagen AG — which really likes to make use of vehicle platforms and powertrains — decided to spin off a Four-Ringed offering.

Although Scout hasn’t detailed its vehicles just yet, the company announced it’ll use the latest 800-volt EV architecture. That would allow up to 350 kilowatt-hour charging capabilities, along with dual-motor drive systems, with the aim to output at least 1,000 pound-feet of torque.

With Audi utilizing the same tech, its rugged off-roader will likely boast similar specifications.

Adapting to US auto tariffs

The Audi model will also supposedly get range-extending capabilities.

Audi’s apparently jumping on the rugged four-by-four bandwagon as a way to boost its US sales. After the Trump Administration slapped tariffs on the auto industry for foreign automakers, it severely affected the company’s American sales, falling almost eight percent in the first nine months.

In a recent investor meeting with Audi’s chief financial officer, Jürgen Rittersberger, he claimed the tariffs alone are projected to cost the automaker over €1.3 billion or $1.5 billion USD this year alone.

The Ingolstadt-based luxury automaker is hoping this new SUV would help the brand recoup its losses. And the reason why it’s going electric with the option for range-extending capabilities is to align with the automaker’s still prevalent electrification efforts.
