Beyond continuing to represent one of the world’s definitive off-roaders, the Toyota Land Cruiser is also an overlander’s best friend.

That’s because the Land Cruiser’s hallmarks include its four-wheeling capabilities, versatility, reliability and durability. One company decided to really lean into those talents, with a hint of nostalgia. It results in what could be one of the most badass Land Cruiser overlanders yet.

An overlander based on the baddest of Land Cruisers

The company in question is Bushwakka. Based out of South Africa, the firm originally gained notoriety for builds based on single-cab Toyota Hilux models and the Series 70 Land Cruiser.

More recently, the company catapulted itself back into the spotlight with its latest Kamelback Camper Conversions.

Like some of Bushwakka’s original creations, the Kamelback campers start life as OG Land Cruiser Series 70 models. This time around, the builds involve the larger, four-door crew cab pickup versions with the extended bed.

Nothing says badass like an overlanding rig built on one of the best four-wheelers in all the land.

It also happens to be one of the coolest Land Cruiser models Toyota still builds today. The Series 70 is basically the global Land Cruiser from the 1980s.

But rather than being put to rest for becoming obsolete, Toyota continued its production from its consistently high demand in some of the furthest corners of the planet. The carmaker even modernized it so that it could still be sold today in those high-demand regions.

The FJ70 is one of the most iconic versions of the Land Cruiser due to its resilience and ruggedness. Those qualities are what helped develop the nameplate’s reputation as one of the most formidable four-wheelers in all the land.

Because it’s basically an ’80s Land Cruiser that you can buy new, it’s also wholly nostalgic and representative of a bygone and beloved era.

But Bushwakka then goes ham with the overlanding modifications. It results one of the most comprehensively equipped and kitted-out campers we’ve ever seen.

Everything you need to live the nomadic life

As such, Bushwakka’s Kamelback comes with all the amenities that you’d expect out of a comprehensive overlanding machine. (Yes, including the kitchen sink.)

However, because it’s based on a Series 70 Land Cruiser, it doesn’t bring any of the bulkiness and added burden of a large and expensive van or RV.

Equipment highlights include a fully walk-in bedroom area, which leads to a high-rising pop-up rooftop tent, an integrated lavatory and bathing area, an onboard potable water system, a pull-out double-burner gas stove range and tons of securable storage options.

There’s also a retractable awning for when it’s time to set up camp and the spot’s temporary lounging quarters. An integrated high-voltage power system helps provide electrons to all the necessary ancillaries, like the LED lighting system, and it can even be upgraded with optional 380-watt photovoltaic solar panels.

The Kamelback Camper’s structure is also composed entirely of lightweight aluminum for the utmost strength and durability. And the build can be completed on either the single-cab or crew cab versions of the FJ70.

Availability and pricing

If you’re interested in the Bushwakka Kamelback Camper, the firm has announced that it’s ready to take orders and commence builds. However, you’ll have to be local to its South African HQ and provide an FJ70 donor vehicle.

But the company exclusively told us that it’s looking to expand its equipment offerings to other markets, like North America, in the near future. Kamelback Camper conversions start at the US-equivalent of around $33,000.
