What started as an insanely ambitious SEMA one-off build will soon be rolling off the factory floor in a form you can actually buy.

There was a time not too long ago when Ford’s Fox Body Mustang was widely panned. Despite this style being the longest production run of the Detroit marque’s flagship pony car, people regularly scoffed and scowled at the mere thought of the vehicle.

Oh, how things have changed.

Now, Fox Body Mustangs are among the most sought-after of the long-standing model for their unique combination of performance, availability, customizability and — despite the aforementioned period of hating — a touch of nostalgia.

If you need proof, look no further than the 1991 Velocity Fox Body Mustang LX by Velocity, slated to be the world’s first production restomod Fox Body Mustang.

Foxy lady

This project was originally planned as a one-off bespoke custom job for this year’s SEMA show. However, it appears the folks at Velocity got a bit of a wild hare and decided to widen their ambitions, much to the likely excitement of Fox Body appreciators everywhere.

However, it’s key to remember that this isn’t a simple job. It’s a complete nuts-and-bolts, ground-up restomod. That means Velocity has completely overhauled this Mustang inside and out.

Thankfully, they’ve remained faithful to the once-divisive exterior styling, maintaining its boxy looks. However, there are some noteworthy tweaks.

For instance, it has a new coat of Jet Black BASF Glasurit paint, a two-inch cowl hood with Ringbrothers billet hinges and Carter’s Customs side splitters.

The upgrades extend to the interior, as well, which now has a custom center console and door panels, Recaro Expert M heated seats, a Sparc Industries wheel designed specifically for Velocity, a Focal audio system mated to a Blaupunkt Frankfurt head and Vintage Air climate control.

But wait until you see what’s under the hood…

Fox Body, Coyote heart

Obviously, Velocity has done a bang-up job on the exterior and interior of this Fox Body Mustang restomod. But the most exciting part of it is undoubtedly what’s waiting for those brave enough to pop the bonnet.

Instead of a paltry 225-horsepower 5.0L V8 at best (and a 105-horsepower 2.3L inline-four at worst), this one sees its engine swapped out for a Ford Performance Gen 4X 5.0-liter Coyote. But it doesn’t stop there.

That engine is mated to a 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission and, more importantly, a Whipple 3.0-liter inverted supercharger. The result: over 800 horsepower delivered to the rear wheels — enough to knock your eyeballs into the back of your skull.

It also gets a carbon driveshaft and Ford 9-inch rear axle and, when you do finally decide you need to stop, Baer six-piston brakes.

Pricing and availability

Per the brand, the 1991 Velocity Fox Body Mustang remains a one-of-a-kind halo vehicle. However, they plan to add it to their Signature Series lineup in 2026, meaning it will undergo a full production run.

There’s no pricing yet announced, but based on the brand’s other offerings, it wouldn’t be out of the question to expect this restomod to be priced in the $250,000+ realm.
