The headlamp is one of those essential items that you can take with you for any outdoor activity. Even if you don’t plan to use it, it’s a good idea to have one in your backpack, just in case. We’re always testing headlamps, and while it’s been around for a few seasons and isn’t the flashiest, we think that Black Diamond’s Spot is the best headlamp you can buy.
The Spot is excellent because it’s simple, but that doesn’t mean it’s basic. The headlamp uses three AAA batteries, and it’s fully waterproof. The main light is 300 lumens, which emits a beam to a claimed range of 80 meters (about 262 feet) and is easily dimmable. There’s also a red night vision setting.
We tested this headlamp from the forests of Vermont to the top of Mt. Rainier, and it’s performed adequately in every situation. It’s also quite affordable — regularly the Spot costs $40, but right now you can get it for $28.
