The warehouse retailer known for bulk savings and treasure hunts just added a premium trail-running sneaker to its latest arrivals—and it’s bound to catch the attention of both running enthusiasts and bargain hunters alike.

Costco is now offering the HOKA Challenger 8, one of the brand’s most versatile and popular sneakers, in two appealing colors for just $127, which is a significant discount from its typical $155 retail price.

Here’s what you need to know about the shoe and what makes this Costco listing worth your attention.

A shoe for all terrains

Hoka describes the Challenger 8 as “built at the intersection of road and trail, the Challenger 8 delivers all the smooth cushioning and confidence-inspiring traction you’ll need.”

This hybrid running shoe has earned a loyal following for its ability to seamlessly transition from pavement to trails, making it an ideal choice for runners who demand a single shoe that can handle varied terrain without compromise.

Hoka describes the Challenger 8 as “built at the intersection of road and trail, the Challenger 8 delivers all the smooth cushioning and confidence-inspiring traction you’ll need.”

We’ve gone as far as to call it the “ultimate entry-level trail shoe.”

The Challenger 8 is the latest addition to the Challenger lineup, introduced in 2025. Compared to the Challenger 7, the new model offers nearly 10mm of additional stack height for added cushion and support.

Compared to its predecessor, the 8th-generation Challenger, which launched in 2025, is a significant update, with nearly 10mm of additional stack height, bringing the heel stack to 42mm and the forefoot to 34mm for an 8mm drop.

The shoe also includes a rubberized toe cap for added durability and reflective details for visibility—practical touches that extend its versatility from dawn trail runs to evening road sessions.

The longstanding Challenger assumed the unofficial title of “Clifton for the trails” after last year’s update.

According to running shoe experts at RunRepeat, the Challenger 8 “moves the series forward with extra cushioning, a higher drop, and a more accommodating fit that benefits a wider audience,” making it particularly appealing for heel strikers and runners who found previous versions too narrow.

Pragmatically speaking, it’s the kind of do-it-all active shoe that should serve wearers well on both city streets and off-road excursions, whether you’re looking to walk, hike, run or engage in all three.

A surprising appearance at Costco

Hoka also says it improved the Challenger 8’s traction by increasing the lug size (i.e., what Blister Review helpfully summarizes as the “small points of raised rubber lining the outsole on most trail shoes.”)
Hoka

While some colorways of the Challenger 8 can be found on sale at select retailers for around $124 – including at Hoka directly – Costco’s new listing includes two classic color options, which aren’t currently discounted elsewhere.

While Costco lists the colors as simply “Navy” and “Black,” judging by the photos, they appear to match the “Midnight Blue/Grout” and “Black / Outer Orbit” on Hoka’s own website.

The catch, as with most Costco deals, is that you’ll need an active membership to take advantage of this pricing. And as with warehouse inventory, availability may vary by location, and stock is limited while supplies last.

In the case of Hoka, we’ve also been informed by brand representatives in the past that “Costco is not an authorized HOKA seller.”

Practically speaking, this means that, like some other name-brand goods Costco has stocked in the past, this inventory could have been purchased on the grey market, i.e., from third-party retailers/wholesalers, but not directly from Hoka.

As consumers, this “grey market” status typically limits your ability to have quality issues with the shoes you purchased addressed directly by Hoka. But at least in this case, Costco’s generous return policies should offer plenty of peace of mind on that front.

We’ve also included the pair of Hoka’s discounted directly below, just in case you lean toward a different color or if your local Costco Warehouse is already sold out.
