J.Crew is an iconic menswear brand by any measure, but its in-house footwear has always flown under the radar.

Collaborations aside, the only shoe that has ever gained widespread recognition is the MacAlister Chukka. But that may soon change with the release of a natural follow-up to that long-running bargain boot.

The Suede Work Chukka Boot is in the same family as the MacAlister, but it is a New England-style moc boot instead of a desert boot. What sets it apart is the stitched multi-panel vamp and midsole construction.

While the British military popularized the latter during WWII, the former comes from a long tradition of shoemaking in the Northeastern United States.

A handful of brands make the best examples of this beloved American boot style in small workshops scattered around Southern Maine. J.Crew’s version offers one distinct advantage over those heritage brands: a cheaper price.

Mainer boots

American footwear manufacturing began to plummet around the turn of the century, but one area where the industry is thriving is Southern Maine. Local crafting techniques passed down for generations create some of the country’s most coveted boots and shoes.

The key feature that drives this cottage industry is hand-sewn moc toe construction. The method is used for moccasins, boat shoes, loafers and boots that hold up for decades and mold to the owner’s foot like no other type of shoe.

J.Crew’s new chukka is modeled after a moc-toe boot that evolved from the moccasin. Some of the best examples are the Rancourt & Co. Harrison Boot ($388), the Easymoc Scout Boot ($398) and the Yuketen Maine Guide Boots ($780).

J.Crew sells the Suede Work Chukka Boots for $298 because they are imported. No information about where the boots are made is disclosed online, and they are not available until October, but J.Crew produces most of its leather footwear in China.

That said, I’ve tested many pairs of J.Crew boots and dress shoes, and the quality has been consistently on par with what is expected of the price range.

Undoubtedly, the Suede Work Chukka Boots do not meet the level of craftsmanship displayed in its American influences, but it doesn’t appear to be far off.

What’s in your sole?

Since I haven’t gotten my hands on a pair yet, the big question I have is how the midsoles are constructed. The most important feature of Made-in-Maine chukka boots isn’t the hand-stitched moc toe but the wrap-around midsole.

They all use traditional moccasin boot construction, which has a single piece of leather for the lower vamp that wraps around the foot and is stitched to a leather midsole panel, which is then attached to the outsole.

This method creates a boot that molds to the owner’s foot like a leather glove as it breaks in, practically making it a customized fit. That comfort has driven the rising popularity of the New England-style chukka boot in recent years.

What I can say for sure is that the Suede Work Chukka Boots feature a hand-sewn moc toe and Vibram lug outsole with a Goodyear welt, both of which match the competition.

Regardless of how the midsole is constructed, the Suede Work Chukka Boots check enough boxes to be an excellent alternative to the Made-in-America boots that cost at least $100 more.

J.Crew’s under-appreciated reputation for respectable in-house footwear demonstrates that, at the very least, it is a well-made boot that looks the part.

Availability and price

The J.Crew Suede Work Chukka Boots are available now for pre-order from J.Crew for $298. Orders will ship out, and the boots will appear in stores, on October 15, 2025.

Only one color is available at launch, a dark tan suede. However, J.Crew has released over a dozen distinct suedes and leathers in the MacAlister boot over the past 35 years, so more options will likely come down the line.
