Is This the Best-Looking Version of a Beloved BMW Street Bike Yet?

Try not to be too “jaloux” when you see what the renowned German brand has been getting up to over in L’Hexagone.

What’s French for forbidden fruit? Not only “fruit défendu” but also F 900, apparently.

That’s the only conclusion I can draw upon spotting yet another pair of gorgeous German motos you can only get in the home of Les Bleus.

BMW’s highly capable F 900 R gets an aesthetic update that’s as cool as they come, literally.

On the heels of last summer’s France-specific F 900 GS and R 1300 GS Dark Editions come new special editions of the F 900 R and F 900 XR that are also agonizingly out of reach.

While the 900 XR’s elusive Aurelius Green livery is quite eye-catching, the 900 R’s combo of paint, style and price might actually be the more envy-inducing of the two.

Cool customer

In contrast to its sport bike brethren, the roadster 900 picks up a shadowy scheme known as Frozen Grey.

If it looks familiar, perhaps you are a fan of the brand’s four-wheeled offerings, as it is derived from models found in the brand’s M range.

The beauty of the hue is how well it plays with various similarly toned components of the bike. (Feel free to insert your own Fifty Shades of Grey joke here.)

To really point up this connection, BMW pictures the F 900 R alongside an M5 Touring done up in what the car division calls Frozen Deep Grey.

This hue is special even on the auto side of things; though many colors are standard, adding this one as an option will cost you a cool $3,600 (on top of $125,300).

Motorcyclists also face an upcharge, but one that is much less steep: While the base price of the F 900 R is €7,900 (~$9,178 USD), the special edition starts at €9,500 (~$11,036 USD).

(Lest any four-wheel devotee accuse you of being a cheapskate, however, feel free to point out this is just over a 20 percent upcharge vs. less than 3 percent for the car.)

To really max out the darkly dazzling effects, moto customers can also add a tinted windshield plus a seat cover and engine cover color-matched to the paint.

Of course, beyond the hue, the bike retains all the specs that make it so desirable in the first place, highlighted by the same lively 895cc engine that powers all the brand’s 900s, from sport to adventure.

Making 102 horsepower at 8,500rpm and a maximum of 68.6 Ib-ft of torque at 6,750rpm, the twin cylinder ensures whatever color the bike is will soon become a blur.
