“Learning to choose is hard. Learning to choose well is harder. And learning to choose well in a world of unlimited possibilities is harder still, perhaps too hard.”
So wrote psychologist Barry Schwartz in his groundbreaking 2004 book, The Paradox of Choice, which posits that while we think we want more choices, we are happier and more satisfied when not overwhelmed by the effort of deciding amongst an onslaught of options.
So we have bad news and good news. The bad news is, knife and EDC makers just won't stop rolling out more and more awesome products. The good news is, we've at least narrowed down the best new ones to a magnificent seven, each with its own charms. And honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the items highlighted below. So hey, pick one and be happy.
This long-awaited non-locking friction folder is WESN's most compact and lightweight knife ever. Intended for food prep out on the trails, the Samla features a 2.45-inch sheepsfoot blade made of strong, corrosion-resistant Sandvik 14C28N stainless steel. Titanium or wood scales and phosphor bronze washers round out a wilderness-ready package that looks as fine as it functions.
Encased in a lightweight aluminum handle, the latest incarnation of the late Kit Carson's iconic M16 boasts three signature innovations. Assisted Opening combined with an IKBS ball bearing pivot enables it to flip open swiftly and smoothly, while a Deadbolt lock ensures it'll stay in place once deployed. Notable for its edge retention, the 3.58-inch D2 steel blade takes care of the rest.
Benchmade 430SBK Redoubt
With a deep-carry clip and a weight under 4 ounces, the Redoubt slips easily into your pocket and travels light. When it's time to tackle various daily tasks, the grippy Grivory handles and a 3.55-inch serrated drop-point CPM-D2 blade ensure your grasp is solid and your cuts are true. The knife officially drops later this week, and you can sign up to be notified when it does.
Titan International Walnut & Torched Bone Damascus
Available exclusively at Bespoke Post, this pocket knife boasts striking looks and excellent performance at an affordable price. The 3.5-inch Damascus steel blade literally ripples with sharpness and strength, while the 4.5-inch handle turns heads with a fierce combination of carved walnut wood and torched bone. A leather belt sheath makes it easy to tote, too.
Swiss Army Pioneer X Alox Limited Edition 2022
For the eighth year in a row, Victorinox rolls out its sparkling Alox collection, complete with embossed and anodized Swiss-made aluminum scales. The capsule features Classic SD and Hunter Pro knives, but we favor the Pioneer X, a slim but handy multi-tool featuring a large blade, reamer, punch, scissors, can opener with a small screwdriver and bottle opener with screwdriver and wire stripper.
Craighill Kepler Pen
Is $78 a lot to spend on a pen? Yes. But this one has such a cool wavy vibe, it's almost guaranteed to ignite a random conversation that, somewhere down the road, ends in you using it to ink a life-changing six- or seven-figure contract. The Kepler is available in brass, stainless steel and vapor black stainless steel and takes Schmidt 635 refills.
Phoozy 2.8L TechCapsule
As streamlined as our smart gear has gotten, one element that continues to be clunky is our always-growing collections of cords, cables and chargers. This EDC pouch seeks to sort out the mess with intuitive storage for digital detritus. Bonus: the TechCapsule's Chromium Thermal Barrier shields electronics and accessories from heat, cold, rain, snow, mud and more.
