Custom-order is a term that smoothly applies to suits and cars, and, in the realm of outdoor and sports equipment, to items like road bikes and ultralight backpacks. But custom down jackets? Those aren’t so common, but that’s what Anne Michelson and the team at Crescent Down Works have built their business on.
Michelson is a down veteran — her first job was at Eddie Bauer. Bauer is credited with inventing the quilted down jacket in the 1930s after a near-death experience that occurred during a fishing trip in Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, and it was that product that he founded his now-iconic brand on. Michelson leveraged the knowledge she gained working at Eddie Bauer to start Crescent Down Works, which initially made custom-order down vests. Today the small company offers more than that though; in addition to vests, there is a range of down styles that include the classic hooded parka, a long-cut Arctic jacket, a bomber jacket and more. Many of the pieces are more in keeping with the heritage of down jackets and more closely resemble Bauer’s 1940 Skyliner than the ultralight coats worn to climb mountains today.
All of Crescent Down Works’ products are made to order in its factory, which is located in Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood. Seattle is home base for many outdoor companies — REI’s headquarters is in the city — and Crescent Down Works is part of a subset on that list that focuses on bespoke items.
