Are Algae Products The Next Big Thing in Sustainability?

The quest for sustainability continues.

At the 39th London Marathon yesterday, more than 42,000 runners picked up algae pods of water at mile 23 instead of a paper or plastic cup. The Notpla pods made with seaweed and plants were filled with water that could then be popped in runner’s mouths to hydrate. While it sounds bizarre, it’s not the first time algae has been used in sustainable products. Brands are working with Bloom Foam, a company that turns algae into foam, to design sneakers, backpacks and more.
