Austin, Texas-based Kammok isn’t your typical outdoor company. The approach it takes to making gear is lighthearted and innovative but doesn’t lose its grasp on functionality. Sure, it makes sleeping bags and a tent, but it’s perhaps better known for its camping hammocks and trail quilts. These items are slightly more particular, but executed expertly and creatively. Kammok’s newest products, however, are not niche; they’re bags.
Kammok is calling its new collection of bags Burro. The set of four, which includes two backpacks, a duffel and a hip pack, is currently funding on Kickstarter with an expected delivery date of December 2019. Made with the company’s custom Adamas fabric (a 70-denier ripstop nylon with a laminate core and a PU coating), the bags are sleek and lightweight yet rugged and weatherproof.
They’re also versatile, a trait that’s core to Kammok’s identity (take its tent-hammock as an exemplar here). Both of the Burro packs include a back panel that does double-duty as a padded laptop sleeve and is easily removable for any other use you might think of. When it’s removed, the pack’s main body crumples down to a small, melon-sized wad that’s easily packed in a suitcase.
Another element that we’ve noted after getting hands on with the Burro Roll 26 backpack is that the bag is notably discreet, despite its technical outdoor foundation. In addition to its fabric, Kammok equipped the pack with ice axe loops, water bottle holders and a stretchy front stash pocket that calls to mind backpacking bags. And yet, none of these shout out their existence, which makes the Burro Roll the type of pack you might use in a city Monday through Friday and carry to a summit on the weekend.
