Here’s How Some of Your Favorite Outdoor Brands Are Joining the Global Climate Strike

Going dark for a worthy cause.

Climate-Strike-Gear-Patrol-Lead-Full

This Friday, 16-year-old Swedish environmental wunderkind Greta Thunberg’s latest demand for climate change action kicks into gear with the Global Climate Strike. Taking place just a few days before the UN’s Climate Action Summit, the protest promises to get loud: more than 2,500 events across 150 countries are planned for this Friday and next Friday, when participants will join forces with the International Earth Strike

And it’s not just school kids participating. A large number of indigenous, labor, religious, humanitarian and environmental organizations are getting involved, as are a number of brands in the outdoor space. Below are a few notable companies going dark in support of this initiative. You can learn more and even join up yourself at the Global Climate Strike site.

Burton

Burton is closing all global offices and owned stores so employees can join the strike in their regions. It’s also using all its flagship stores as action centers where people can mobilize for marches. And for 24 hours on September 20th, the brand’s website will not take any orders or make any sales, instead redirecting to the Global Climate Strike site.

Patagonia

Patagonia is well-known for standing firm in solidarity with environmental movements. “The climate crisis is a clear and present danger to our health, our pocketbooks and our employees and their families,” wrote Rose Marcario, Patagonia’s CEO, in a LinkedIn blog post. The company plans to close its retail stores on Friday, September 20 and is using its Patagonia Action Works website to help activists find events they can participate in around the world.

Outdoor Voices

Outdoor Voices is committed to circularity and longevity to minimize environmental impact. On September 20th, its employees will walk out of their offices, close down their shops and join the cause of Thunberg, whom they consider a Recreationalist (Recreational Activist). On a local level, the brand is encouraging the community to join up prior to the rallies in each city for coffee — bring your own (sustainable) mug — and sign-making.

Specialized

Specialized is joining the Global Climate Strike by temporarily shuttering its website and global headquarters on Friday. Cyclists looking to make online purchases on the 20th will be redirected to the Global Climate Strike site. Additionally, the company is putting on a ride from its Morgan Hill facility to city hall and encouraging its employees to participate and help “pedal the planet forward.”

Why You Shouldn’t Buy New Outdoor Gear

Americans are quantifiably obsessed with outdoor gear. That’s not necessarily a good thing. Read the Story
