Even amongst Arc’teryx’s own impressive catalog, there are some pieces of gear that stand out as the crème de la crème.

The Proton Hoody, an insulated, stretchy midlayer designed to provide breathable warmth during high-output winter activities, is one such standout.

Already a favorite among dedicated outdoor users, its latest update positions the Proton Hoody to become one of Arc’teryx’s most sought-after releases yet.

Better than ever

The Proton Hoody is already a coveted midlayer, but a selection of updates, ranging from subtle to immediately noticeable, have the potential to elevate the hoody to “cult favorite” status.

First, there’s the noticeable: the eye-catching, rich-hued new colorway, Carob, is a chocolatey brown, which makes it perfectly on-trend but also timeless.

Then there’s the invisible, but impactful update. The new PFAS-free DWR coating lends the jacket the same efficacious waterproofing as before, but in a way that avoids the use of nasty forever chemicals.

Along with the most recent updates, Arc’teryx has been steadily improving the Proton over the past year.

An impactful (yet hidden) change is the new Coreloft Compact insulation, a 100 percent recycled filling that regulates temperature and performs even when wet, which is paramount in alpine conditions.

The Proton Hoody also features a proprietary new face fabric, Fortius Air 20, which is a blend of hard-working nylon and elastane.

The proprietary material is designed to balance breathability, weather resistance, durability and stretch — all essential qualities in a hard-working midlayer.

Availability and pricing

The revised Proton Hoody is available now on Arc’teryx’s website, retailing for $350.
