Some 62 years ago, Buck Knives changed the game with the 110 Folding Hunter, which many consider it to be the original modern folder

Designed by Al Buck, son of brand founder Hoyt Buck, it boasted a high-tension lockback mechanism that gave it near fixed-blade capability, making it a huge hit with hunters and everyday users.

While the brand has made the most of that breakthrough’s legacy, to the tune of more than 15 million units produced, last year it embraced modern EDC with the Range Series, its first-ever blades incorporating a top-notch crossbar lock.

Now, the newest member of that family, the Carbon Fiber 791 Range Elite (Stealth Run #014) is putting the likes of Benchmade and others on notice with its material and functional excellence.

Buck of the century

What makes this particular treatment so special is that it blends Buck’s newfound mastery of crossbar locks with some of the finest materials available today.

Toward that end, the blade is a 3.4-inch drop-point made of MagnaCut super steel.

This material continues to reign thanks to its superior blend of toughness, corrosion resistance, edge retention and ease of sharpening.

When it comes to handle scales, it doesn’t get much fancier than gold-threaded marbled carbon fiber.

Making it stand out even more, Buck again taps the great Paul Bos to apply his legendary heat treatment.

That’s not all; the blade also gets an Armor Black Cerakote treatment, which further boosts corrosion resistance while imparting a stealthy tactical vibe.

In addition to being hugely secure, the crossbar lock makes one-handed deployment and retraction smooth and swift.

This aesthetic is perfectly complemented by an upgrade to the handle scales, which graduate from aluminum to gold-threaded marbled carbon fiber with blacked-out hardware and pocket clip.

In addition to a stunning look, the material helps the knife stay lean and light: a tidy 3 ounces.

The proverbial cherry on top? The ambidextrous thumb studs get a glow-in-dark tritium insert from Glow Rhino, ensuring this darkly dazzling treatment shines even after the sun sets.
