Classics are classics for a reason. Often, that reason is that they transcend their era, earning them timeless status. The humble slipjoint knife is one such enduring offering, at least in the realm of everyday carry.

Even so, just because something is a quintessential hit, that doesn’t mean it can’t be altered or updated. In fact, when done respectfully and with reverence, a revamp can increase our collective appreciation.

Need proof? Take a gander at Civivi’s latest take on its Slippy Sendy EDC knife.

Slip into something more comfortable

It’s important to note that the Slippy Sendy is not a new silhouette. However, these latest editions are somewhat of a departure — one that brings them more in line with the folding knives of yesteryear. This is a good thing, in my opinion.

The existing Slippy Sendys are great, don’t get me wrong, but there’s a sleek minimalism to the new ones that better captures the spirit of traditional slipjoints. That starts with a pocket clip deletion.

Without a pocket knife, the styling of these knives is even cleaner than before. They’re also slimmer — just 10 millimeters at their widest point, making them even easier to slide into your pocket.

But how do you retrieve them from your pocket when they lack a clip, you ask? Civivi solved this with an elegant, traditional addition: both versions get a little lanyard attached to the bottom of the handle — leather for one and paracord for the other.

While you could remove the lanyard for an even more minimalist vibe, it gives you something to reach and grab onto. It’s a simple, time-honored touch that adds character and a historical nod to these new takes.

The little lanyard attached to the end of the handle is a nice nod to heritage knives of the past, and it makes up for the lack of a pocket clip.

Small blessings

While stylistically conventional, the knives’ construction is unmistakably modern. The version with the leather lanyard comes with green and red G10 handle scales, while the paracord option gets even more contemporary semitransparent Ultem scales.

Both knives have Nitro-V steel blades, which measure 2.81 inches, and feature nail nicks for manual deployment. Technically, they both have the same edge length, but they do have some slight differences.

The Ultem edition has a black stonewashed finish and a drop-point shape that verges almost on a sheepsfoot. The G10 has a more traditional drop-point shape that’s almost angular enough to qualify as a clip point, and it has a satin finish.

All in all, both knives measure 6.52 inches long, which is on the shorter side of the EDC spectrum. However, they are weighted differently — 1.65 ounces for the G10 and 1.38 for the Ultem — which is a result of their material differences.
