When it comes to pocket knife development, the best innovations are those that improve not only form but also function. 

If they also manage to spark some measure of joy, that is also, of course, a huge win.

Hitting all those notes at once is the latest spin on a small wonder from CJRB that already delivers outsized capability.

The knife is called the Maileah, and it’s now available with a glow-in-the-dark handle while still ducking under 50 bucks.

The best light of your knife

Before we dig into the details, it’s worth noting that this knife comes to us from Savannah “Swaggs” Swaggerty, a sometime YouTuber and rising force in a traditionally very male-dominated space.

Part of the small crew behind Tennessee-based Rosecraft Blades, Swaggs has honed her chops designing knives for not only CJRB but also Kizer, with a style that’s generally fun and whimsical and not afraid of color.

For that reason, it’s not too surprising that the latest of nine different variants of the Maileah has a handle that lights up your knife.

While this obviously adds visual interest, it’s a bona fide feature too, as the glow makes it easier to find in a cluttered pack, a dark tent or when you drop it in the dirt after sunset.

In other words, it stacks a bit of extra value on top of a product that weighs just 2.18 ounces and takes up little space but delivers when called upon. 

That’s thanks to a sand-polished 2.39-inch wharncliffe blade made of AR-RPM9, Artisan Cutlery’s classic budget-friendly blade steel known for its corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening.

It’s not the type of steel to knock your socks off, but take good care of it and it’ll capably tackle pretty much any everyday task that comes its way, from cutting boxes and twine to slicing an apple to whittling the perfect marshmallow-roasting stick by the campfire.

Pivoting on a ceramic ball bearing, the blade deploys two ways, via ambidextrous thumb studs or a front flipper, with a sturdy liner lock holding everything in place.

The ergonomically shaped G10 scales are grip-friendly, while the deep-carry tip-up clip makes it easy to tote in your pocket till you need it. 

Suffice to say, while the discounted price of $45 may never go away, there’s no reason to wait on this one, either.
