Knifemaking brand Cold Steel is not known for subtlety. Even its most famous designs are, in a word, robust. Yet, while everyday practicality might not be the brand’s forte, there’s no denying its prowess in crafting exceptionally formidable cutting tools.

For proof, just turn to the outfit’s latest release, the Cold Steel Immense. As its name suggests, this folding knife is not for the faint of heart. And yet, its sheer size is still somehow dwarfed by its utility.

The knife measures a whopping 10.0 inches in total and weighs 6.75 ounces.

Practically ginormous

Immense isn’t just a boastful name; it’s an accurate description of this folder. Altogether, this sizeable knife measures an intimidating 10.0 inches from tip to tail. And it weighs 6.75 ounces. I’m not saying you couldn’t EDC this knife, but you’ll likely want to clear out an entire pocket just for the knife if you do.

The knife’s length breaks down to a 3:2 ratio, with the blade measuring 4.0 inches and the handle making up the remaining 6.0 inches. Of course, size isn’t everything. Thankfully, this knife also has materials that back it up.

The blade is crafted from XHP steel, a Carpenter-made high-performance, powder-metallurgy material renowned for its corrosion resistance, high hardness and excellent edge retention. For the unfamiliar, you could say this steel is like D2’s more rustproof big brother.

Despite its intimidating size, its unique blade is actually quite adept at precision cutting work.

The handle is built from machined, textured G-10, which is the largest reason this hefty cutting tool doesn’t weigh a lot more than it does. And yet, this material is still incredibly tough, durable, grippy even in soggy conditions, resistant to warping and resistant to chemicals.

Put simply, the steel and handle are both tough enough to go through the wringer and come out the other side no worse for wear. And that’s a very good thing, considering the brand is positioning this knife as an outdoor folder.

Taiwanese mastery

You might notice that the knife’s point of origin, Taiwan, is printed on the side of the blade. What you might not know, however, is that the connection is deeper than where this knife is manufactured.

See, the unique leaf-shaped blade is modeled after a Shilin Cutter, a century-old folding knife style originating in Taiwan. This unique shape offers exceptional strength for tougher cuts and chops, but it also allows for excellent precision work, both important factors for outdoor usage.

Of course, this knife is far from traditional. It is also equipped with more modern mechanisms. Namely, it boasts Cold Steel’s now-legendary Tri-Ad lock, another exceptionally strong element that speaks to its overall robustness.

It also has a thumb disc deployment, a contoured and ergonomic grip, a beefy reversible pocket clip and a lanyard hole toward the butt. While the size of this knife alone might frighten off casual users, those with a flair for the formidable, especially for bushcraft and similar outdoor use, will likely find it highly suitable.
