Filson’s New Handcrafted Knife Is So Nice, “Heirloom” Might Be Selling It Short

Knifemaking is an art, full stop, and I won’t hear otherwise. That said, there’s a difference between those that are mass-produced and those that are lovingly, painstakingly crafted by hand.

The Filson x Graycloud Engraved Packer Knife falls firmly into the latter category. And yet, for all its exceptional beauty, it remains a rugged, versatile cutting tool fit for bushcraft adventures and survival.

Bushcraft beauty

It’s important to note that, despite being mesmerizingly beautiful, this knife is, first and foremost, a tool designed to be used. In fact, its size and shape are ideal for backcountry usage, in the tradition of bushcraft fixed blades and survival knives.

That means it doesn’t have an overblown silhouette. Instead, it measures in at 8.0 inches overall, with a 4.0-inch blade. While that might seem small to some — a ton of fixed blades that clock in at least two to four inches longer — it’s in the ideal range for true survivalists and bushcrafters.

Why? Smaller knives offer better control, making them more adept at precision-focused tasks, like carving and food prep. They’re also more lightweight, which makes them easier to carry — essential when every ounce matters, as in a survival situation.

What that should tell you is that Filson’s collaborator, award-winning Seattle bladesmith and artist Robb Gray (who goes by Graycloud), knows his stuff. Of course, the silhouette is only part of the story. The materials and finishing are just as essential in making this knife the masterwork it is.

All the fixin’s

As is appropriate for the style, this is a full-tang fixed blade, meaning the steel of the blade extends all the way to the end of the handle. That steel, by the way, is Böhler N690, a sibling of M390 that’s functionally similar to VG-10, known for having superior toughness.

At the blade end, the knife also boasts stunning Sheridan-style engraving (stylistically similar to filigree, it’s a Western floral motif traditionally used in leather tooling). It has a stunningly wavy jimping pattern on the spine, which is also functional, as it assists the user when exerting pressure on the edge.

Opposite the business end, the handle is just as, if not more beautiful. It’s made from a combination of walnut and alder. And the scales are secured to the tang via copper Corby bolts.

The whole package is served in a stunning presentation box, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and an oiled Latigo leather sheath for easy handling. As you can see, “heirloom” might be underselling it.

Even the box the knife and sheath come in is a work of art, although it pales in comparison to the tool inside.

Pricing and availability

Only 10 examples of the Filson x Graycloud Engraved Packer Knife have been made, and they’re priced at an eye-watering $2,199 apiece. Unfortunately, we have confirmed that they are already sold out and have no plans to replenish.

That said, sufficient sign-ups for notifications would indicate to the brand that this project warrants a follow-up at the very least.
