The variety isn’t just aesthetic either, as colorful new treatments boost the bestselling EDC item’s lifespan too.

For more than four decades now, Leatherman has dominated the multi-tool market by consistently offering an unbeatable mix of functionality, quality and variety.

Regarding the latter, the brand now makes more than two dozen different multi-tools to suit your needs, not to mention an impressive little line of “single-function products” aka knives.

Last year, the Portland, Oregon-based outfit embraced a new approach to boost its range, steadily adding protective Cerakote treatments to a number of its most popular products, with great success.

There is perhaps no better evidence of the appeal of this experiment than the fact that Leatherman has doubled down on it.

Following last week’s seasonal drop with three new treatments means the small wonder known as the Leatherman Micra is now available in a more diverse mix of function-forward hues than ever before.

Finish tough

For those unfamiliar, Cerakote is all the rage these days, for good reason. Applied as a thin ceramic layer, the treatment boosts resistance to abrasion, wear, corrosion and chemicals.

No wonder it’s been popping up on all sorts of products lately, not only pocket knife blades and multi-tool handles but also gravel bike forks and motorcycle engines, to name a few.

The Micra got its first round of the treatment in the spring, courtesy of upgraded hande treatments dubbed Parakeet, Cappuccino, Heathered Blush and Mojito.

Following the Pumpkin Spice flavor hue that coincided with the return of the Starbucks PSL last Tuesday, the brand just released three more fall-ready treatments — Mulled Wine, Spruce and Winter Fog — raising the total number of Micra variants to a whopping 10.

Keychain king

There’s a good reason Leatherman is amping up this particular product: With more than 1,100 on-site reviews and an average rating of 4.8/5 stars, the Micra is hugely popular.

That’s in no small part because it is quite affordable, compact and functional. Costing $55, weighing 1.8 ounces and measuring just 2.5 inches closed, it fits easily on a keychain yet offers ten super-useful everyday functions.

Perhaps the handiest function of the Micra (shown here in Spruce) is scissors where the pliers normally go.

The built-in tools include a 1.6-inch 420HC knife, nail cleaner, nail file, tweezers and bottle opener.

The unsung heroes, however, are the flat/Phillips screwdriver, medium screwdriver, extra-small screwdriver and, where you’d typically find pliers, a robust pair of spring-action scissors.

The size and mix of features make the Micra perfect for throwing in purse, pocket or pack, ready when you need it most. Just make sure to choose your colorway wisely, as this dynamo is built to stick around a long, long time.
